HOLDER FOR ELECTRIC-LIGHT SHADES.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEWIS J. ATWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Holders for Electric-Light Shades, of which the following is a specification.

Shade-rings have been made for holding glass shades and reflectors either in an upright or a suspended position, and the shades employed with incandescent electric lamps have been hung from a holder clamped upon the casing or sleeve into which the base of the incandescent electric lamp is received,

and in some of these holders a portion of the Weight of the shade has been received directly upon the clamping-screw, which interferes with the free rotation of such screw and also tends to bend or injure the same.

My present invention relates to a holder for shades, in which the clamping-ring is provided with movable or expansive ends having projecting fingers that pass beneath a bridge-piece upon the shade-holding ring, whereby the clamping portion of the holder is always permanently connected with the shade-holder independently of the clampingscrew, the duty of which clamping-screw is simply to draw the movin g ends of the clamping-ring together, thus rendering the holder more durable and reliable than those heretofore constructed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 2 of a portion of the holder.

The shade-ring A is of suitable size, and it is provided with ears 2 and clamping-screws 3 for connecting the flange of the lamp-shade to said ring, and there are arms 4. 5, extending inwardly and turned upwardly, for the reception of the clamping-band B, which band is secured by rivets or otherwise to said arms at and 5 at equal distances, or nearly so, from the ends of such clamping-band, and upon the clamping-band, near the ends thereof, are the ears 6 for the clamping-screw 7, which passes freely through one of the ears, and the other car forms a nut for such screw, and the extreme ends of the clamping-band B are formed as fingers 9, that pass beneath the bridge-piece 8 upon the shade-ring A. It is preferable to cut out the sheet metal of the shade-ring in the form indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l, the bridge-piece 8 being a part of the metal in the inner portion of the ring, there being a slot between the bridgepiece and the metal of the ring, so that when the bridge-piece is turned up vertically the fingers 9 are received into the slot below such bridge-piece and above the shade-ring, and the width of the slot is sufficient for the fingers 9 to move freely as the clamping-band is expanded for passing upon the collar or sleeve of the electric or other light or contracted to clamp the same by rotating the screw 7, and under all circumstances the weight of the shade is supported directly by the bridgepiece 8, resting upon the fingers 9 at this side of the shade-holder, and by the arms 4 and 5 connected to the other side of the clampingband, and I remark that in place of two arms at and 5 being made use of one arm might be substituted direetly'opposite to the ears 6 and screw 7.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the shade-ring A, having arms projecting inwardly, and the bridge-piece 8, of the clamping-band B, connected to such arms and having fingers 9, passing into the slot below the bridge-piece 8, and the clamping-screw 7, passing through the ears 6 of the band B, substantially'as set forth.

2. The combination, with the clampingband B, having ears 6 and projecting fingers 9, of the screw 7, passing through the ears, the shade ring A, having an inwardly-extending arm, to which the clamping-band is fastened, and the bridge-piece 8, formed integral with the shade-ring and having a slot between the bridge and the shade-ring for the reception of the fingers 9, substantially as set forth.
