Description

(No Model.)
A. B. RICHARDSON. SASH FASTENER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ALBERT B. RICHARDSON, OF HAMILTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASHFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,926, dated September 23, 1890.
Application filed April 9, 1890. SerialNo. 347,220. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. RICHARD- SON, of Hamilton, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew anduseful Improvern ent in Sash-Locks, which will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claim.
In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing my invention in connection with portions of the upper and lower sash and jamb-casing- Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. l, with certain parts in transverse section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line X X, through the sash-fastener.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastener by which the upper and lower sash may be securely locked together when both are closed or when both or either are opened, while both sash may, through the lower one, be locked to the casing, whether both are opened or closed, or when either is opened and the other closed; and t-he invention consists in certain features of novelty, which will be hereinafter fully described, and specified in the claim.
Referring again to said drawings, A represents the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and B is the meeting-rail of the upper sash, C being a stile of the lower sash and D of the upper sash, while E is the jamb casing, the usual parting-bead being shown at a and the lowersash-cord at h. Abeti-plate is shown at c, which is secured to the top side of A by screws, as shown. Upon this plate is pivotally secured by pivot j the catch h, having the hook la, that engages in notches m in plate Z, that is secured in stile D of the upper sash, catch h being actuated by stud t' that projects above it.
The foregoing parts are not herein claimed, as they have been already secured to Ine by United States Letters Pat-ent No. 423,082, dated March ll, 1890.
At the outer edge of c, I form integral with it the tube-like portion CZ, in which is arranged to slide freely the bolt e, in which is secured the thumbpiece f, the stem of which Inoves in the longitudinal slot n, cut through the wall of LZ, a transverse cut or passage at p allowing the turning down of fwhen bolt e has been projected into casing E, and plate g therein secured, as is shown in Fig. l; and whenfis thus turned down upon plate e it locks catch h in position, so that its hook 7c cannot be disengaged from plate Z so long as it is thus turned down, the relations of the parts when thus interlocked being clearly shown in Fig. l.
It will be obvious from this description, in connection with the drawings, that whether either or both the sash be entirely closed or partly opened, with hook 7o engaged in plate Z, and with bolt e, engaged in casing E, and withfturned down to lock h in such position, by no possibility can the window be farther opened from the outside till the glass is broken, the extent to which my device when locked allows the window to be opened, either at top or bottom, not permitting the introduction of an arm for any purpose.
I claim as my invention- A sash-lock consisting of bed c, provided with catch h, having hook k, the tube-like portion CZ, with bolt arranged therein and provided with thumb-piece f, arranged to lock catch Zz when its hook is engaged in notched plate Z, all substantially as specified.
ALBERT VB. RICHARDSON.
