GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,405, dated September 16, 1890.
Application filed April 21, 1890. Serial No. 348,784. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J DoMEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shanesville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,inwhich Figure l is a View showing the gate closed and latched. Fig. 2 is a view showing the gate closed and illustrating the location of the catch -bar when the gate is properly closed. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the latch-post with the catch-bar and its spring located thereon.
The present invention has relation to gatelatches; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the hinge-post, to which is hinged the gate B. To the latch-post O is attached the sliding latch a, which is held in the desired position by means of the notched blocks 1) or To the sliding latch (t is pivotally attached the operating-lever c, which lever is pivotally attached to the post 0 by means of the bolt (1 or its equivalent. The sliding catch-bar D is attached to the latch-post O by means of the staples e, and is so adjusted that it will come in contact with the inner end of the sliding latch a when said sliding latch has been withdrawn from engagement with the gate B, said catch-bar being forced over the inner end of the sliding latch a by means of the spring f, thereby looking or holding the sliding latch at out of the way of the gate B. The sliding latch is provided with the pin 9, which pin is received in the slot hat the bottom or lower end of the operating-lever c. It will be understood that the pin g may be located on the operating-lever c and a slot formed in the sliding latch a, and the same object accomplished.
In use, when it is desired to open the gate 13 the operating-lever c is turned so as to dis engage the sliding latch a from the gate B, at which time the spring f forces the catchbar D endwise and holds the sliding latch from engagement with the gate, and at the same time the gate is partially opened by means of the pin E bearing against the free end of the gate B. Then it is desired to latch the gate, the free end of the gate B is pressed against the pin E, thereby forcing the catch-bar D endwise and disengaging it from the inner end of the sliding latch a, at which time said sliding latch (L is forced endwise by means of the spring F.
For the purpose of providing a bearingpoint for the free end of the spring f the right-angled portion d is provided. For the purpose of providing a bearing-point for the spring F the shoulder 61 is provided; or, if desired, the free end of the spring F may press or bear against the outer end of the sliding latch a.
In Fig. 1 a staple G is shown attached to the latch-post O, which staple is for the purpose of preventing any accidental displacement of the operating-lever c.
The springs f and F are attached at their bottom or lower ends to the latch-post C in any convenient and welll nown manner, and are so adjusted that their top or upper ends will at all times press or bear toward the latch-post (1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isr 1. The combination of the gate 13, hinged to the post A, the sliding latch a, the operatingdever c, pivotal] y attached to said sliding latch a, the catch-bar D, provided with the pin E, and the springs f and F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the gate B, hinged to the post A, the post O, having attached thereto the sliding latch a, and the catch-bar D, the operating-lever c, pivotally attached to the sliding latch a, and the springsf and F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
