w -Ommzz WM f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ALBERT B. DISS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO A. B. DISS & CO.,
1 OF SAME PLACE.
p FuRlN'l-ru RE-cAsTER.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 436,308, dated September 9, 1890. Application filed May 5, 1890. Serial No. 350; 607. (No model.)
To aZZ wkom it may conoern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. Drss, a citizen of`the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Furniture-Casters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to produce a caster for furniture which shall be light and strong and which shall be cheaply constructed, so as to compete in price with other casters already on the market.
Casters for furniture have heretofore been made Wherein there is a socket receiving the spindle and a base-plate formed with said socket, the socket being adapted to be driven into the hole in the furniture, and said casters are secured by screws passing through the base-plate. Some of these casters have sockets and base-plates of cast metal, which frequently break and are a source of annoyance and expense. Others have sockets and base-plates of soft stamped or struckup metal With a hard-metal bearing-washer, with the upper end of the spindle passing through the washer and the top of the socket and riveted thereto; but these are expensive to manufacture and cannot be made out of sheet metal sufiiciently stiff and strong to be driven into the hole in the furniture.
My invention relates to a caster-socket stamped up from sheet metal; and the same consists in the combination, withthe spindle, the plate, and caster-wheel, of a socket of Sheet metal cut out and bent up into circular form, with a central perforated bearing for the upper end of the spindle and fianges at the open end of the socket, and the contracted end or pin of the spindle passes through the central bearing and is riveted up, whereby the spindle and socket are united, so that when the parts are not in use they are inseparable, and When in use the socket prevents the spindle of the caster falling out if the article of furniture is carried from place to place.
lu the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the caster and section of the furniture-leg.
Fig. 2 shows the sheet-metal blank. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same as partially struck up to shape, and Fig. 4: is a section of the socket. i
A represents a portion of an article of furniture in which a hole is made at 1 for the reception of the caster. l
a represents the spindle, and a' the pin at the end thereof.
b represents the plate of sheet metal conneoted to the spindle, and b' the horns by which the caster-wheel c is carried.
The socket d is formed of sheet metal, pref-, erably steel. The blank is cut out, as shown i in Fig. 2, as a strip having parallel edges and notched at 3 4 around the central bearing e, in which is an opening 2. This blank is stamped up by suitable dies into the form shown in Fig. 3, wherein its respective parts 5 6 are formed semicircular, with the respective fianges d' bent at right angles to the parts 5 6.
In the next operation the parts 5 6 of the blank-socket are brought together to form the cylinder or socket cl, Fig. 4., the ends of the parts 5 6 abutting and. closing in against the edges of the central bearing c, which now forms the end of the socket. This socket is of a size adapted to receive the spindle a, the end pin a' being passed through the opening 2 and riveted, so as to secure the socket to the spindle.
My improvedcaster is simple in construction, is strong and not liable to be broken,
` because made of sheet metal, and the same is comparatively inexpensive.
I claim as my inventionfl The combination, with the caster-wheel, horns, and spindle, of a socket of one piece of sheet metal, with a central bearing e for the upper end of the spindle, half-cylindrical portions 5 and 6 around the spindle, and projecting flanges d' at the lower ends, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 2d day of May, A. rD.
' ALBERT B. DISS.
