IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,600, dated July 19, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEEs'roN C. PEARsoN, of Harrison county, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new andl useful Improvements in Hay-Presses, and Ihereby dedescription of the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figures l and 2 represent vertical sections of my 1nachine,taken at right angles with each other. Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the same. l Y The frame of my press consists of four substantial pieces of timber placed in an upright position, and bound together at the rear side by three ties, marked A, and in front by one tie, marked B. The ties O C O bind the tiniber at one end of the frame, and the tie D thev timbers at the opposite end.
E in Fig. 1 represents a lever, with its fulcrum F pivoted in the ties A and B. The lever E plays vertically on its fulcrum, as representedby dotted lines.
G represents a forked plunger, the lever E being made to work between the forks by means of a bolt,which passes through the lever and through both forks. At the lower end of plunger G the follower H is adjusted, in the center of which a inortise is made to receive a tenon on the end of plunger G, and is secured in that position by means of abolt. In the bottom of follower H a number of lateral grooves are cut, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
I represents a platform resting on the vties It has a number of grooves cut in it corresponding with those in follower I-I, and also with the slots in the vertical board J, which forms vThe dotted linesKrepresent the door in front of the press raised to a horizontal position to admit the hay or other material` into the press. The door K is pivoted at its upper edge in the front parts of theframe. The dotted lines L represent a second door at the end of the press, which is also pivoted at its upper edge, and may be used for the same purpose with door K.
m represents a horizontal shaft passing through the end posts of the frame, and projecting at one end beyond the frame-post.
The projecting end is made square for receiving a crank, by which it is operated. On this shaft is the loose pulley n. On one end of n a groove is cut, into which the lever P fits. The lever P passes through a cornerpost of the frame, and has its fulcrum at the point t. The opposite end of pulleyn has slots out in it to receive an ironpin, which passes through shaft m.
s represents la cord, one end of which, is fastened to the pulley n and the other'end to the long arm of lever E. To the short arm of lever E the cord r is fastened, which, in its descent, passes in a groove in pulley V, and
at its lower end is attached to a heavy weight.
The operation of my machine is as follows: The door K being first raised to supply the press with the necessary quantity of hay, the long arm of lever P is pressed down, so as to force pulley n to the right until the pin in m enters the slot in u. By this arrangement the pulley will partake of the motion of shaft m. The crank is now turned from left to right, and the cord s wrapped around the pulley n. This operation gradually draws down the long arm of lever E, and with it the plunger G and follower H, which compresses the hay. The bale being now reduced to its proper size is rmly bound by' means of cords or hoops, which are passed through the grooves'inplatform I, through the slots in J, and returned to the front through the grooves in H, and the ends securely fastened. The next step is to disengage the pulleyn from the pin by means of lever P, and the weight on cord r draws down the short arm of lever E, and elevates the long arm to its original position.
Having thus described my press, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
