IMPROVED FOLDING TABLE.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,538, dated July 12, 1864.

Be it known that we, JOSEPH W. WAYNE and JOSEPH R. MILLER, both ot' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a-new and useful Portable Table 5 and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. r

Our invention relates to a double table ot' peculiar construction, adapted, when not in use, to be compactly folded together for the purposes of transportation or of storage.

Figure l shows onehalf of the table, illustrating the process of folding or unfolding it. Fig. 2 shows a complete table in its folded form. Fig. 3 shows the same extended for use.

A represents atablc-top. B B' are two legs hinged to the under side of the table-top, and connected at mid-length by a round or rundle, C, which serves to pivot to said legs B B' two otherlegs, D D', whose upper extremities, d cl', are adapted in the extended position to occupy sockets a a' in the under side of the tabletop. The legs D D', having been inserted in the sockets a a', may be secured against accidental displacement by means of spring or other catches,E E', which enter sockets F F' in the sides of' the said legs D D. y

When it is desired to reduce the device to its mostcompact form, the catchesE E' are disengaged, and the four legs are folded back against the under side of the table-top, as shown in Fig. 2. A large number of tables thus folded may be stacked one upon another and secured in a bundle by means of cleats, much in the same manner as wash-boards, and in this form may be shipped or carted to great distances without injury or the danger ot' misplacing parts, and when arrived at their destination will be ready for instant service. Socketsfin the legsD D', receiving the catches E il', serve to hold the table to its closed condition. (See Fig. 2.)

The complete table is made by uniting two of the sections above described by hinges, as represented in Figs. 2 and 3, Fig. 2 representing it in its folded, and Fig. 3 in its extended form.

We claim as new and of our invention- As a new article of manufacture, the double folding table, constructed and Operatingin the manner herein represented and described, and for the purposes specified.
