IMPROVEMENT IN IN HALATOPLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,536, dated July 12,1864;
patented in England and France May 10, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE VERGNEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the apparatus destined to introduce medical substances into the lungs and throat by inhalation; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
Having noticed the difficulty of conveying by vapor the salts and heavy substances to the cavities ot' the lungs, 85e., in eases of phthisis, I have planned this apparatus, by which I can convey them in a pulverulentstate.
To enable others skilled in the business to makeand use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed and making part of this specification.

A represents the box or whole exterior of the apparatus; B,thepersoninhaling; C,theopen ing to which the mouth is applied while using it, and which is thus closed; D, an interior box, generally of tin, (the bottom is semi-cylindrical, to lit the sweep of the rotary fan E, an opening at one side of the tin case D, to admit the air which is drawn in by the rotation of the fan; F, the outside apertures admitting air; G, the cover or roof part of the box; H, the wings of the fan, made of hair or feathers, or any light substance; I, the sieve, which is set in the bottom part of the cover G to diffuse the rising powders, which, as the breath is drawn, come up through the sieve with the air.
The shape .or construction of the exterior box, A, is not essential. It is to inclose properly the inner box, D, and the sieve I. The box D is made to take in or out at will for cleansing. The revolving fan is also made to take in or out, to be cleaned, or when different preparations are to be used. The crank therefore requires to be connected with the inner box and fan by a screw-shank, to be screwed into place after the box D and its revolving fan are putin. One end of the shaft or cylinder to which the wings H are attached has a journal or pivot. p
The fan may be made with few or many wings and these constructed of hair, feathers, or any light substance. To put this to use, the top or cover is opened and the pow ders putin. rIhe medicated powders should be pulverized to the highest degree and superdesiccated, and be kept bottled and safe from the absorption of water from the air. When these are put in, the cover is shut down and the person who uses them sits before the box, as shown, Fig. 1, and, placing the mout-h and nose in the opening (l, so as to close it, turns the crank with more or less speed, according to the nature of thepowders, to disturb them and infuse them in the air, at the same time drawing in the breath. rIhe expiration of breath may be out ofthe box or within it; but out of it is best. Vhat I claim as iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use and construction of a box to contain medicated powders for respiration with a revolving fan for mixing them with the air to be breathed, in the manner substantially as above described.
