UNITED STATESl PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS J. CRONIN, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
STEAM-.BOILER.
SECFCA'ON forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,858, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889. Serial No. 314,919x (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS J. CRONIN, of Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in ythe Construction of Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of steam-boilers, and espe- Cially to an improvement upon the construction set forth in Letters Patent granted to myself November 14, 187 6, No. 184,346.
The object of the invention is to so construct a boiler that the tubes may at any time be eftectually and expeditiously .freed from scale.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim'.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a boiler having the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section through the same and on the line a: in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y of Fig. 2.
The boiler lO illustrated is a tubular boiler of the usual construction, and the fire-box 11 is surrounded at the sides and top with a straight and arched boiler section or shell 12. This boiler section or shell is provided with a transverse slot or opening` 13 in the upper face, located above the tubes 14 at the rear of the tube-sheet of the fire-box, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The walls of the opening are preferably strengthened by attaching re-enforcing strips 15 upon the inner face of the shell, as best shown in Figs. 2 and The cover 16 of the opening 13 is usually bolted to the outer face of the shell and provided with a washer or packing 17, secured to the inner face, consisting of asbestus or equivalent material, whereby a steam-tight joint is effected.
Near the bottom of the front section of the casing or shell 12 the customary hand-holes 18 are produced, closed by the steam-tight plates. y
In operation, when the cover 16 is removed, any form of scraper may be introduced through the opening 13 Within the boiler-shell and manipulated vertically to free the tubes and the tube-sheet of the iire-box from scale. As the scale is removed from the tube it falls to the bottom of the casing and is re moved. through the hand-holes 18. By arranging the slot or openingin the upper face of the boiler in rear of the tube-sheet of the fuebox free access is had to the tubes and tube-sheet, so that the scale can be loosened from the tubes and tube-shect, broken up and forced to the bottom of the casing in a much more effectual manner than has heretofore been done.
Having thus `described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent A locomotive-boiler having its tubes in vertical alignment, and provided with a transverse slot or opening in its upper face over the tubes and in rear ot and adjacent to the tube-sheet of the fire-boX, substantially as described, whereby provision is made for having access to the tubes and tube-sheet to facilitate the loosening and breaking up the scale thereon and forcing the same to the bottom of the casing, as specified.
CORNELIUS J. CRONIN.
