UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FELIX C. DARROS AND JOHN C. RIGHTER, OF SALEM, NEW JERSEY.
VENTILATING-BLIND.-
' SPECIFICATION forning part of Letters Patent No. 421,165, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed February 20, 1889. Serial No. 300,580. (No model.)
'To all w/wm, i may concern:
Be it known that we, FELIX C. DARROS and JOHN CHARLES RIGHTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Blinds and Windows, which improvelnent is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of a Ventilating blind or window having removable slats and means for holding the same in position.
Figure l represents a view of the inner side of a Ventilating blind or window embodying our invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent vertical sections thereof on line cc 0c, Fig. l, the fastening device of the slats being in different positions. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a portion thereof. Figs. 5 and 6 represent sectional views of detached portions on enlarged scales.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several igures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of a Ventilating blind or window, and B designates the slatsthereof, which slats are fitted to the side stiles C and central rail D of the frame, as follows: In the side stiles are parallel slots E, which extend horizontally and are closed at top and bottom by the walls of the stiles, as will be seen in Fig. 5. In the central rail are slots F, which are coincident With the slots E, and are closed at bottom but open at top, as will be seen in Fig. 6.
' Hinged to the top of the frame A or upper end of the central rail or stile D is a bar G, which, as will be seen, closes the open ends of the slots F, said bar being held in position by a screw H or other suitable fastening or means, and has slots F on its inner face, the same coinciding with the slots F of the central rail. It will be seen that one end of each slat occupies one of the slots E and the other end occupies one of the slots F. Now as the top Aof the slot E is closed by the'wall of the 'side stile and the top of the slot F is closed by the rail D it is evident that the slats are securely held in position.
When it is desired to remove the slats, the bar G is unscrewed and swung outwardly or detached, when the ends of the slats in the rail D are accessible. Theslats may now be withdrawn from the said rail and the side stiles, and afterward reapplied. The bar G is then restored and secured, when the parts are again in their normal position.
In practice the slats are arranged obliquely, so that air may pass between the same, and they may be made of Wood, glass, dac. When made of glass or other transparent material, they admit light, and may be colored and 0rnamented and serve as signs for names, addresses, dac.
If desired, the side stiles mayliave bars similar to the bar G for the central rail or stile, (see dotted vertical lines, Fig. 1,) the slots of the side stiles then being open at top similar to those of said central rail or stile, the object of said bar or bars in either case being to secure or lock the slats to the blind or window, especially on the inside thereof.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A Ventilating blind or Window consisting of side stiles with parallel s lots or grooves in their inner sides, a central rail with slots or grooves on its sides coincident with the slots or grooves iii the side stiles, and a hinged bar with slots or grooves continuous of the slots or grooves of the central stile, said parts being combined substantially as described.
. 2. A ventilating-blind consisting of a frame having side stiles with slots in their sides, an inner rail With side slots coincident with the slots of the side stiles, and a movable bar having slots continuous of those of the inner stile adapted to be secured thereto, said parts .being combined substantially as described.
FELIX C( DARROS. JOHN C. RIGHTER.
