UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE IV. IVHITE, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO GEORGE W. ROSS, CF SAME PLACE.
SOUNDlNG-POST FOR VIOLINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,025, dated January 21, 1890.
Application filed March 9, 1889.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE WV. \VHITE, of Somerville, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Sounding-Posts for Violins and other Stringed Instruments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
Sounding-posts for violins and other stringed instruments have heretofore been constructed as a single straight cylindrical bar or post. In use it is placed between and in contact with the top and back of the instrument to enhance the vibration. I have found in practice, however, that the vibration of such form of bar or post or its power to transmit vibration is very limited.
This invention has for its object to construct a sounding-post for violins and the like which is elastic and flexible, so that it may yield, rock, or bend at a point between its ends to rapidly respond and transmit vibratory impulses.
In accordance with this invention the sounding-post is made from a single piece of wood or other suitable material formed to present two parts or portions connected by a neck. To strengthen the post thus formed, suitable braces are provided.
Figure 1 shows in side elex ation a sounding-post embodying this invention. Fig. 2 shows in side elevation a sounding-post of the old or common form.
The sounding-post shown in Fig. 1 is made of a single piece of wood or other suitable material, and comprises the parts a 1;, ar-
ranged in alignment and constituting the post proper, the olfsct portions 0' Z), extended at one side, and the neck 0, connecting the offset portions a b. The offset portions to b are extended beyond the neck 0, and braces a b are employed to stiffen the parts. The sounding-post thus formed comprises, essentially, two parts or portions weakened at a point between its ends and con nected. only Serial No. 302,700. (No model.)
by the neck 0, and as the faces of the lllStlU- mentv vibrate these parts rock on the neck a as a fulcrum, and being made of wood or other suitable material will readily respond to and transmit the vibrations.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the particular construction herein shown, as it may be variously modified and yet retain the essential feature of this invention, which is a post weakened at a point between its ends so as to present two parts or portions adapted to vibrate or rock.
I claim 1. The sounding-post for violins and other stringed.instruments, consisting of the two portions a I), having the offset portions a b, and the connecting portions 0, connecting the two oifset portions.
2. The sounding-post for violins and other stringed instruments, consisting of two parts or portions arranged in alignment and connected by the neck or portion 0 at one side thereof.
3. The sounding-post for violins and other stringed instruments, consisting of the parts I or portions a I), having an intervening space between them and having offset portions a b and the neck or connecting portion 0, connecting the offset portions a b. 4. The sounding-post for violins and other stringed instruments, consisting of a single piece of material cut away or weakened at a point between its ends to present a fulcrum upon which the parts or portions may rock.
5. The sounding-post for violins and other stringed instruments, consisting of the two parts or portions a l), the oitset parts or portions (4 Z), neck 0, and the brace bars or portions 60 b 7,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAURICE \V. WHITE.
