M. SIERSDORPER I OUTLERY POLISHER AND SHARPENER.
No. 428,321. Patented May 20, 1890.
rrlllllllllllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL SIERSDORFER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CUTLERY POLISHER AND SHARPENER.
SPECIFiCATiON forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,321, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed May 22, 1889. Serial No. 311,720. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL SIER SDORFER, a citizen of the United States, residing atLouisville, county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Combined Cutlery Sharpener and Polisher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements in details of construction of machines for sharpening and polishing cutlery and the like, having for its object the rendering of such machines more complete and more conveniently operated.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical-transverse section on the line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the plane indicated by line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. at is a horizontal sectional View in the plane of line 4 4, Fig. 3.
1 is the base-plate of the machine, and 2 2 are end frames having angular cut-away portions 3 3.
4 4 are the front plates bent to follow the edge of the cut-away portion of end plates 2. The upper front plateis also bent to form the top of the case of the machine.
5 is the rear plate, hinged at 6 to form a door and held by catch 6.
7 is a drawer to receive and enable the removal of powder and scourings.
S S are two Wooden solid rollers covered with a heavy layer of felt or other good polishing material. The trunnions of these rollers are mounted in boxes 9 9, which are guided in vertical slots in end plates 2 2 and are drawn toward each other by spiral tensionsprings 10 10.
Upon the trunnions at one end of rollers 8 S are pinions 11 11, meshing with a large gear 12, carried bya short shaft 13, also carried by one end plate of the casing. A suitable crank or hand Wheel 14 on shaft 13 enables its operation, and motion is thereby transmitted to rollers 8 8. On placing a knife in the aperture between front plates 44: and pressingit back and forth between the rollers while they are rotated the knife can be Well polished. To provide equal pressure on the knife in opposite directions, so that it Will notmove'either in or out except as forced to do so by the operator, the gear 12 engages the adjacent sides of pinions 11 11, turning them in the same direction.
That a good polishing-surface may be maintained on rollers 8 8, I provide in the top of the case a hopper15, to be kept supplied with polishing-powder, which is fed therefrom to the surface of the upper roller. Upon the trunnion of upper roller 8 opposite to pinions 11 11, I place a wheel 16, having faces of different diameters. Upon the larger is placed a heavy polishing-ring 17, of felt, for use on silver and other articles, and on the smaller an emery-band 18, which may be em.- ployed for sharpening various articles preliminary to their polishing on felt ring 17.
A sponge-cup 19 is useful for Wiping the cutlery before placing it between the rollers 8 8' to be polished.
Clamps 2O serve for attaching the machine to a table or other support.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of base-plate 1, end
plates 2 2, curved front plates at 4:, extending from end plate to end plate and adapted to guide a knife-blade or other article between them, rollers 8 8, situated, respectively, above
