IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MAKING MINI BALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,785, dated May 17, 1864. p
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, PETER NAYLOR, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Manufacturing Mini Ride-Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a plan of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

Mini balls have heretofore been made by a die and punch acting upon a slug or short cylinder of lead, as set forth in Letters Patent granted to me April 1, 1862. In this class of machinery the greatest accuracy has been required, for if the slug of lead was too short the mold would not be completely filled, and if too large a thin featherof lead would be pressed out, that had to be subsequently removed, causing expense, and often injuring the ball by destroying the perfect accuracy of the hase. p
My present invention is an improvement upon the aforesaid invention patented April 1,1862, and so intimatelyv connected therewith that I hereby make reference to the said Letters Patent for a description of the means for supplying the lead bar, cutting the same olf in slugs or sections, and delivering the same to the dies, it being unnecessary to repeat that description in this place.
The nature of my present invention consists in a peculiarlytted vibrating cutter, in combination with the punch and die that form the Mini ball, whereby the ball is pressed with great solidity into the die by means of the pointed punch that forms the cavity in the ball. The said punch is then withdrawn, and the cutter vibrates across the face of the die and removes any feather of lead that may be left projecting, and makes the base of the ball perfectly true, after which the ball is delivered from the die.
In the drawings, a is a frame of suitable construction, carrying the cross-shaft b, propelled by competent power. o is a sliding diestock, sustained in the bearings d d, and reciprocated by the crank e and connection f. At the end ot' this stock c is a die or punch, r, formed conical and of the size required for the cavity in the ball, and s is a solid die, sustained in a, with a cavity of a size corresponding to the diameter of the ball, and to this die-cavity a pushing or delivery punch, 6, may be applied, as in the aforesaid patent.
The slug or section of lead being supplied as aforesaid is to be slightly larger than required for filling the die, so as always to insure a perfect ball, and the surplus lead is squeezed out in the form of a thin feather between the surface of the die s und punch 1'. To remove this feather, l apply the cutter u, that is hinged to the end ot' a lever, c, on a fulcrum, c', and kept to the face of the die s by a spring, w. a: isa cam on the shaft b that acts upon the lever v, and causes the cutter u to descend and remove the said feather and true'off the base of the ball while in the said die s. The position and shape of this cam av are such that it acts upon the cutter at the proper time after the punch or die r has been withdrawn, and before the ball is ejected by the punch 6. A spring, y, is employed to draw the end ot' the lever v toward the cam but if said cam were formed as a groove, taking a pin on the lever v, said spring might be dispensed with.
I do not claim a cutter to remove the surplus lead from a mold in which balls are cast; but

An automatic vibrating cutter, in combination with the die s, punch or die r, and ejecting-punch 6, for the purposes and as specified.
