Description
NITED STATES JOSEPH R. HEBERT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DRESS-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,510, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed August 1, 1889. Serial No. 319,478. (No model.)
in the specification and pointed out in the claims, the object of my invention being to provide a simple and effective means to adjust said form to the various sizes desired.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents an inside view of my improved form or stand with the sections of the form cut away through a line 00 as, Fig. 2,to more clearlyshow the adjusting mechanism. Fig. 2 represents a top plan View of the form; and Fig. 3, atop plan view of a detached section of the adj LlSl'r' ing mechanism, to be referred to more fully hereinafter.
In the drawings, Arepresents the standard or post upon which the several parts are supported, and is adapted to be supported in its vertical position by a base or support of any suitable construction.
B B represent the sections arranged around and having suitable connection with the post or standard, and adapted to be adjust-ably expanded or contracted, by means as will hereinafter be described. Said sections consist of two or more vertically-arranged ribs suitably connected by horizontally-arranged tie-pieces, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and at their upper ends have connection with supportingplates 0. The said sections are supported and adapted to be expanded and contracted in their relative position to each other and to the central post or standard by two sets of levers, (represented at F and G, respectively.) The upper set of levers, or those adapted to adjust the waist of the form, are fulcrumed at f on an adjustable collar A, located and adapted to be operated on the standard A or a threaded collar thereon, as will be hereinafter described, and are pivotally secured. at their upper end to the supporting-plate O or a projection or projections thereon, as shown at d in Figs. 1
.tions, as clearly shown in Figsl and 2.
and 2, and at their opposite end engage or embrace the inner edge of a longitudinal slot 1, located in one of a series of plates orflanges H, projecting from the standard A or a collar secured thereon. In this instance a tube or covering, as represented at H in Fig. 3, is located and adapted to be secured in a fixed position on the said post or standard, and from which extend at opposite sides four plates or flanges, (represented at 1-1,) as more clearly shown in said Fig. 3. Each of the said flanges or plates is provided with two longitudinal slots I 1, arranged at an incline from a point near the center toward the opposite ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and is adapted to be engaged by the innerends of the two said sets of levers F and G, for the purpose to be hereinafter described. The said lower set of levers G are also fulcrumed 011 an adjustable collar (represented at A located and adapted to operate on the standard A in a position below the said plates or flanges H, the said standard being threaded on its exteriorasufficient distance for the operation of the said adjustable collar, as will be described. The said 1evers G at their inner or upper ends engage or embrace the edge of the lower slots or openings in the plates or flanges II in substantially the same manner as the uppersetF engage the upper slots in said plates H, and at their lower or outer ends said leversGhavea pivoted or loose connection with loops or straps a b 0 (Z, which have connection with the sides or outer edges of each of the said sec- The standard A is provided with a knob or handle D on its upper end, to enable the same to be turned or revolved to vertically operate the lower collar A upon the same, as will appear obvious, and the upper collar A is 10- cated in this instance upon an externally- ICO the inner ends of the latter, engaging the inclined guideways I in the plates or flanges II, are drawn inwardly, or toward the standard A, which serves to throw the upper ends of said levers outwardly to expand the waist or top of the form. The lower part of the form is adjusted in substantially the same manner as the upper part. In this instance, however, the lower fulcrum-collar A is located on the standard A, as before described, and by turning or revolving the latter to vertically adjust the fulcrum-collar A located thereon, the lower or outer ends of the lovers G are eX- panded or contracted to adjust thelower part of the form, and the operator is enabled to adjust the form to the desired size by means of a suitable scale located 011 the plates or flanges H at the side of the inclined guideway therein, in which the ends of the adjusting-levers F operate, as will appear obvious.
Having thus set forth my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is.-
1. In a dress-form, the combination, with a central standard and a series of ribs arranged around said standard, of a series of plates or flanges arranged around said standard and provided with inclined guideways, and one or more series of adj usting-levers centrally pivoted on adjustable collars, connecting wlth the said guideways and ribs at opposite ends, sub-.
stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a dress or skirt form adapted to be adjusted for varied sizes, the combination, with a central standard and a series of ribs arranged around said standard, of one or more series of adj usting-levers centrally pivoted to a movable collar, one end of said levers connecting with the said ribs and the opposite end with inclined guideways, substantially as described, and-for the purpose set forth.
3. In a dress-form, the combination, with a central standard and a series of sections arranged around said standard, of an upper and lower series of levers centrally pivoted on adj ustable collars and having connection at one end with the said sections and at their opposite ends operating in inclined guideways located in plates or flanges projecting from the said standard, and a scale, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH R. HEBERT.
