Description

(No Model.)'
0. BOLANDER. BAG HOLDER AND SPREADER.
No. 426,906. Patented Apr. 29, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC CHARLES BOLANDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLlNOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES E. HALLSTROM, OF SAME PLACE. I
BAG HOLDER AN 0 SPREADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,906, dated April 29, 1890. Application filed February 13, 1890- Serial No. 340,237. (No model.) i
vice for holding and spreading open the mouths of bags or sacks, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a device embodying my improved features, and.
Fig. 2 a broken-away plan in detail.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a bag or sack supported in an open position.
B B are two curved spreading-pieces arranged relatively, as shown. These curved spreaders engage with the inside mouth of the bag and are provided with one or more sharp projecting points a, which pierce and hold the bag in the proper position, as'
shown. On the upper side of the spreaders are placed the companion blocks C C, and resting on these are the front ends of the lever-arms D D, the different parts being secured together by means of the bolts a a. The blocks C C raise the arms up out of the way from having contact with the bag. The opposite or rear ends of the lever-arms are pivoted, as at a a to the stationary bar or stand C, and provide for a lateral movement in a horizontal plane of the front ends of said lever-arms. Near the longitudinal center of the lever-arms are pivoted, as atb b, the outer bifurcated ends of the transverse toggle-levers E E. The inner ends of the toggle-levers are mortised or interlocked together, as at cl, and are retained in an adjustable position by means of the handle-pin F. This pin projects downwardly inside of the bag, and is adapted to bear against the.
inside mouth at that point and assist in spreading the bag when the parts are expanded.
- The toggle-levers are operated by means of the handle pivot-pin connecting the inner ends. Fig. 1 shows the levers in a locked position and the spreader expanded. Fig. 2 shows the toggles relaxed, which movement has the effect of throwing the spreaders inwardly toward each other, so that the bag can be conveniently removed and another placed in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-1. In a bag-holder, the combination of the curved Spreaders, the lever-arms bolted at their front ends thereto, the rear ends being pivoted to a stationary object, the transverse toggle-levers pivoted at their outer ends to the respective lever-arms and their inner or joining ends interlocked, and the handle pivot-pin locking said toggles together, substantially as described.
2. In a bag-holder, the combination of the curved spreaders, the lever-arms, the blocks interposed between said spreaders and arms, and the toggle-levers pivoted to and located between said arms, whereby the Spreaders are adapted to have a lateral movement in the direction of or away from each other, substantially as described.
3. A bag-holder consisting of the compan- I ion curved spreaders provided with a number of projecting points, the lever-arms bolted at their innerends to said spreaders, the interposed blocks, the bar or stand to which the rear ends of the lever-arms are pivoted, the toggle-levers pivoted at their respective outer ends to the lever-arms, and the handle pivotpin connecting the joining ends of said toggles, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
