- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAUDIA GUIDOTTI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IN FANTS GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,800, dated April 29 1890.
Application filed January 9, 1890. Serial No. 336,435. (No model.)
- T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUDIA GUIDOTTI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Stomach-Protector and Abdominal Supporter for Infants, of which the following is a specification.
By my invention a garment is obtained adapted to form a stomach-protector and an abdominal supporter and a waist to which the diaper ordinarily worn by an infant can be attached, and by which it will be supported, and also a supporter for the diaper-drawers which are at times placed upon an infant;
, and the purpose of this invention is to obtain a garment of the character named suitable for use as an article of clothing for an infant, and which cannot be drawn downward over the stomach or abdomen of the child or slipped or pushed upward above the stomach or abdomen.
A further purpose of theinvention is to obtain a waist adapted to form a stomach and abdominal supporter for an infant.
I have illustrated my invention by the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the garment obtained; Fig. 2, an elevation of the central piece used in the construction of such garment, and Fig. 3 an elevation of one of the two right and left side pieces.
In order to construct this garment easily and economically and at the same time to procure an article of clothing which will properly serve as an abdominal support, I 0011- struct such garment, when the same is made of the textile fabrics generally used about the clothing of infants-such as cotton flannel, muslin, and the like of three pieces or articles, consisting of a central piece and a right and left side piece. The central piece is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, but with the extensions on. such piece which form the shoulder-straps of the garment cut away. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the right and left side pieces. These side pieces are similar in form, a back view of one being identical with a front View of the other. But one of such pieces is forthis reason illustrated.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A is the central piece of the garment.
A A are shouldenstraps formed by extension of the upper part of piece A. I do not, however, consider it an essential part of my invention that the shoulder-straps A be integral with piece A, as these straps A may be secured to piece A, as indicated by the dotted line A A in Fig. 1.
a a are the curved side edges of piece A, which are secured by sewing in the ordinary manner to the right and left side pieces B B.
a is that part of the edge of piece A coming near to or in contact with the arm of the infant when the garment is Worn.
The side piece B has the edge 1) thereof, which is secured to edge a of piece A, curved in form, so that when the edges to and b are sewed together in the ordinary way the garment will, as it is placed upon an infant, fit closely up against the stomach and abdomen of the infant and form a support therefor. The lower edge I) of the side piece B curves upward from the attachment of such side piece B to the central piece A, as such side piece extends around the body and over the hips of the infant.
b is the upper edge of the side piece B, and this upper edge is curved at the part thereof which is designed to form a portion of the armpits required when the garment is placed upon an infant, and the SllflLlilfil-fitltlfliA A are brought over the shoulders and attached .llyflpinningto.tlmpieoes.B at the back of the child and near the end of such pieces B.
b isthe straight edge of piece B, which forms the end of the garment.
0 is a band constructed of a strip of tape or other suitable material, which is attached to the garment by the stitches C.
D D are buttons placed on strip 0 when an attachment is desired for diaperdrawers. 'lhestgip Q in addition to forming a support for the buttons D, is designed to act as anonelastic l ipd tgiding to retain the garment in proper shape when used.
E E are cars secured by stitching c to central piece Aand to one end of one of the side pieces B, respectively. The purpose of these ears E E is to provide a flap which when the IOO.
garment is placed upon an infant shall come approximately directly in front and behind the child, and to which can be pinned with an ordinary safety-pin a diaper worn by the child.
F is a hem or binding running around the entire garment and around the flaps or ears E E, and f f are the stitches holding the hem or binding F.
It will be observed that in addition to the abdominal support afforded by the shape of the garment obtained in uniting the curved edges a b, as described, such shape tends to retain the garment in position when placed upon an infant and prevent it from being pushed or slid upward over the stomach of the child, and when a diaper is secured to the ears E E a yet further protection against the slipping up of the garment is obtained.
No buttons are used to secure the shoulderstraps to the pieces B when placing the garment upon the infant or in attaching the outer edges of B together, as although I have found it convenient and necessary to have diiferent sizes in this garment, yet the rapid growth of an infant precludes the idea of providin any permanent point of attachment of such shoulder-strap or of such pieces 13.
One of the important features of my invention (which Iprefer to construct, as hereinbefore described, of textile fabric cut as stated and attached together in the manner illustrated and set out herein) is that by the employment of the binding F in place of a hem F and by the use of the band C that portion of the garment formed by pieces A and B may be constructed of knitted goods, if desired. In such case the ears E E may, and I prefer that the same shall, be constructed of textile fabric secured by a stitching in the manner described to the garment. The binding 1 and the band C serve, when the body of the garment is constructed of knitted material, to retain the garment in shape, so that the same shall serve, as herein described, for an abdominal or stomach supporter for the child upon whom. the garment is placed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A garment for infants wear, consisting of the central piece A, having shoulder-straps A and curved opposite side edges to, and the right and left side pieces 13, each having a curved edge Z), by which they are attached to the curved edges a of the central piece, said pieces 13 also having the curved lower edge 1), adapted. to rise over the hips of the wearer, and the central horizontally-disposed. band 0.
CLAUDIA GUIDOTTI.
