Be it known that we, JAMES M'UseRAvE and JOSEPH PEncIvAL CLARKE, both of Buenos Ayres, lin the Argentine Republic, South America, have invented a new and Improved Portable Chute, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.

p This invention relates to portable chutes, the object ot' the invention being to provide a chute which may be Inoved from pla-ce to place, and which when in use may be adjusted within certain limits to any desired pitch.

To thc ends named the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully explained,and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, termin g a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a side view of our improved portable chute, the same being represented as it appears when arranged in connection with a vessel that is to be loaded from the shore. Fig. 2 is a side view of the abutment employed in connection with the chute. Fig. 3 is an edge View ot' the abutment. Fig. l is a plan view of a portion of the chute. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line .t ot Fig. 4; and Fig. 0 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the chute.

In constructing a chute such as the one forming the subject-matter of this application we provide supporting-cables l0, which are passed over any proper abutment-such as the one shown at ll-and connected to an anchorge l2, the cables being led downward to the vessel, there passing over an abutment, as 13, to be secured to any proper point upon the vessels deck. In practice we prefer to connect tackles l5 to each end of the cables; but any proper means for adjusting the tension of the cables might be employed. The

chute proper is made up of a series of troughs 20, which said troughs are provided with suspending-irons 2l, the ends of said irons being bent to overlap the cables lO. The lower end of each chute section is provided with a transverse strip 22, upon which the upper end of the next section below rests.

From the construction above described it will be seen that we secure an exceedingly flexible chute, and one which may be easily moved from place to place. It will also be seen that the pitch of the chute may to a certain extent be regulated by varying the tension of the cables.

This chute may be adjusted so as to deliver the material with which the vessel is to be loaded to any one of the hatches, and that, too, without moving the vessel from its anchorage.

In certain cases the chute-sections might be suspended from a single cable, or if more than two cables were required'additional cables might be employed without departing from the spirit of our invention, the essential feature of which is a iiexible support and a series of chute-sections upheld thereby.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 4vPatent- The combination, with cables l0, of chutesections 20, provided with transverse strips 22, and with hooked irons 2l, said irons being arranged to engage the cables, substantially as described.
