Description

HENRY D. OOOPER, OP BOSTON, MAssAOHUsETTs.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,552, dated May 3, 1864.
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY D. COOPER, a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Steam-Boilers; and I do 'hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specication and represented in the accompanying` drawings, of Which- Figure l denotes a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of a steam boiler provided with my invention.
The nature of my said invention consists in the combination and arrangement ot' a rotary fan-Wheel or scraper With the boiler substantially as hereinafter explained, the object of such scraper being` to prevent incrustation of sedimentary deposits on the bottom of the boiler.
In the drawings, A denotes a steam-boiler of the ordinary form and construction. A shaft, B, extends longitudinally through the lower part and opposite ends ofthe boiler, and is provided with one or more wings or scra pers a a a a, which radiate from it, as shown in Fig. 2; or the said shaft may be furnished with a single scraper arranged upon it spirally. The journals ot the shaft may rest in stuffing-boxes in order to prevent escape of steam from the boiler and around the said l journals. Furthermore, the shaft may be furnished with a crank, C, or other means of aiding` in putting it into revolution, as circumstances may require. The cylinder of revolution of the scraper or scrapers should touch or be close to the inner surface of the bottom ot' the boiler. By revolving the fan-Wheel or the scraper occasionally any sedimentary deposits Will be removed from the bottom of the boiler and mixed with the water, so as to be ejected from the boiler durin g the process of blowing off the same. By means of the. long fan-Wheel, and While it may be in rotation, a current will be produced in the water of the boiler which will tend to wash the entire lower surface ot' the interior of the boiler, and thereby cle xnse it of sedimentary deposits and cause them to remix with water, so as to be expelled from the boiler by the blowing-oli'77 process.
What I claim as myA invention is- The combination and arrangement of the fan-wheel or rotary scraper with the boiler, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
h. HENRY ,is D. COOPER.
