Wfizewa REINHOLD IIANDEL, OF LEIPSIC, SAXONY, GERMANY.
MUSICAL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letter 5 Patent No. 424,293, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed November 1, 1889. Serial No. 328,883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD HANDEL, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Leipsic, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Musical Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to toys; and its object is to provide a toy wherein upon the rotation of a series of wings as the toy is moved about in the air a striking device connected with the wings may be made to successively raise and release a series of metal reeds and cause a melody to be played.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the toy. Fi 2 is an end elevation of the same, a part of one of the covers being removed. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the reeddiskiand Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the toy in double form.
The toy consists of a cylindrical drum A, constructed of any suitable material, closed at its ends by removable covers B and B, in which are provided a series of apertures a. Within the drum is fixed in any suitable manner upon a support 12 of any proper material a metal disk 0, having formed therein a series of recesses d, in which metal reeds z are free to be vibrated. Through the center of the disk 0 passes a pivot f, upon the ends of which are respectively mounted a cogwheel 6 and an arm f, extending over the face of the disk, the free end of the arm being bent inward toward the disk and beveled at its point to produce a sharp edge adapted to pass beneath the reeds and raise and release the same.
Upon a pivot g, seated in the disk 0, near its upper end, is mounted a Wheel carrying pins adapted to engage the wheel 6, the wheel g being in turn adapted to be engaged by a pinion h, mounted on the inner end of a shaft journaled in the drum and carrying on its outer end a series of wings m.
In use the toy is held by its handle and moved about in the air, and as the latter strikes against the wings the wheel 6 is set in rotation, and the striking-piece fsuccessively raises and releases the reeds, causing a melody to be played. The arrangement of the reeds may be varied according to the melody which it is desired to produce.
In Fig. 6 the toy is shown as a double one, the parts above described being arranged at both ends of the drum and operating as above stated, the body of the drum being further provided in its periphery with a series of apertures o.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A musical toy consisting of an apertured drum, a disk supported within the drum havin g a series of reeds arranged thereon, an arm pivoted in the center of the disk and extending over the same, a shaft journaled 111 the drum carrying wings on its outer end, and gearing intervening the inner end of the shaft and the pivot of the arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a musical toy, the combination, with an apertured cylindrical drum and a disk supported within the drum having a series of reeds arranged thereon, of an arm pivoted in the center of the disk and extending over the same, a shaft journaled in the drum carrying wings at its outer end, and gearing 1ntervening the inner end of the shaft and the pivot of the arm, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a musical toy, the combination, with an apertured cylindrical drum, a disk supported within the drum having a series of reeds arranged thereon, and an arm pivoted 1n the center of the disk and extending over the same, of a shaft journaled in the drum above the disk and carrying wings on its outer end, a pinion 011 the inner end of the shaft, atoothed wheel on the pivot of the arm, and a wheel intervening the pinion and toothed wheel and engaging the same, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
