' UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH EMANUEL LUDVVIG, OF BERNESIVITZERLAND.
RACK- RAIL FOR MOUNTAIN RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,827, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed May 8, 1889. Serial No. 310,018. (No model.)
this purpose the rack-rails are made of bars of wrought-iron or steel by a rolling or pressing process, whereby the original surface of the bars is partly raised and partly depressed, so that hollow projections constituting the teeth are formed thereon.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an improved raok-rail, together with a transverse section of a pair of rolls adapted for manufacturing the same. Fig. 2 is a section on line a: y, Fig. 1.
a is the body of the bar, having flanges b for fastening the same on sleepers. c are the teeth. The sectional shape of the said bar is, however, unessential, as the teeth may be formed on bars of different shape without departing frorn'the nature of the invention.
I claim as my invention- A rack-rail consisting in a bar of Wroughtiron or steel having hollow projections formed thereon, which are closed at the sides and the top, and which constitute gear-teeth, substantially as described. r
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRICH EMANUEL LUDVVIG.
I Witnesses:
BOYD WVINCHESTER, I J OHANN WABER.
