Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- MORRIS P. BRAY, OF ANSONIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY \V. LYON, OF BRIDGE- PORT, CONNECTICUT.
METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-HOLE STRIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,916, dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed February 16, 1839. Serial No. 300,150. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS P. BRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State ofConnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Making Button-Hole Strips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth- Io ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to certain improvements in the method of making button-hole strips for use in corsets or other garments; and
I5 it consists in the operations and details of manufacture, such as will he hereinafter fully set forth, and then particularly pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a button-hole strip made in accordance with my invention, but with the continuous binder omitted; Fig. 2, a similar view with the continuous binder properly attached; Fig. 3,a detail elevation showingthe first-step z 5 in my method; Fig. aha similar view showing a strip partly made, and Fig. 5 an elevation showing the manner of securing the completed strip within a corset.
Similar letters denote like parts in the sev- 0 eral figures.
My method contemplates the making of the completed strip from separate sections 1, 2, 3, 4., and 5. The sections 1 2 are first placed side by side with their ends in alignment. A binder 6 is nowstitched around said ends and throughout the length thereof, thus uniting the sections 1 2, as clearly shown at Fig. 3. Section 3 is now placed side by side with section :2 and with one end in alignment with the unbound end of section 2, and these ends are also united by a binder 6, stitched thereto. The remaining sections are joined in like manner. These sections are now swung, so as to extend in the same direction and bring the bound ends into parallelism, as shown at Fig l. A buttonhole strip is thus formed, and I then stitch a continuous binder 7 around the front or closed edge of the strip throughout the length thereof to constitute the finished strip shown at Fig. 2.
In securing this strip within a corset or the like the unbound or open edge is inserted between the plies of such corset and united thereto by stitching, as shown at Fig. 5.
I claim- The method of making button-hole strips from separate short sections, the same consisting in placing the ends of successive sections in alignment, uniting said ends by stitching a binder around the same and throughout their length, swinging the sections so united into extended alignment, whereby the strip is formed and said bound ends are brought into parallelism to form the button holes, and stitching a continuous binder around and throughout the length of the front or closed edge of the strip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I ail-"ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS P. BRAY.
