OBSTETRICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.
411,572, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed January 8, 1889. Serial No. 295,725. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. B0130, of Nevada City, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Obstetrical Instruments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a device of novel construction designed to be used either singly or in pairs, one by the right hand and the other by the left hand of the operator as independent members of an obstetrical forceps, the fingers of the operator serving as the handles thereof, substantially hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part .of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of the device as seen from its front or inner side; Fig. 2, a longitudinal view of the same as seen from its opposite side; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section upon the line at m in Fig. 2, and Fig. at a back end view of the device. Fig. 5 is a partly sectional longitudinalview of the forward end portion of the device in illustration of a modified construction of the same.
The (lEWlCQ, which maybe made of German silver, steel, or any suitable material, is composed of three leading parts or features-to wit, an elongated thimble-like or socket piece A, preferably curved in direction of its length with its concave side innermost,- adapted to fit the index-finger of the operator, a loop or ring B, attached to said thimble on its one side near its back end, adapted to fit the second finger of the operator, and a spread for ward end piece 0, of any desired shape corresponding to the acting end of one limb of an obstetrical forceps, and preferably of an apertured or collar-like construction, and arranged so as to lie in a plane which is virtually at right angles with the loop or ring 13. This forceps end piece 0 may either be an integral part of the elongated thimble A, as
shown in l, 2, and 3 of the drawings, or it may be separately and removably attached thereto-as, for instance, by constructing it with a screw-threaded shank adapted to fit a screw-threaded socket in the forward end of the thimble A, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In using the device, one being applied to the index and second fingers of the right hand and another to the index and second fingers of the left hand, the two combined virtually form the two main limbs or members of an obstetrical forceps, the fingers of the operator constituting the handles by which to manipulate them, whereby the operator has a sense of touch which enables him to know with absolute certainty that the instrument is in the proper position, and with this knowledge he can avoid all injury to the mother or child.
By this device a large percentage of children as ordinarily delivered by the forceps in common use can, withthe one blade'or limb which this device constitutes, be safely delivered.
The simplicity in the application of the device and the perfect safety with which it can be used are strong points in its favor. The device, too, occupies but little space and can be used by the operator throughout an entire confinement without the aid of an assistant. It virtually forms what may be termed a suction-thimble. obstetrical forceps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, an obstetrical instrument consisting of the curved socket-piece A for the reception of the indexfinger, having a jaw C at its closed end, and provided with a ring or loop B at its open end for the reception of the second finger, as set forth.
