UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TAYLOR KING, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. ANTES,
OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,900, dated September 10, 1889. Application filed September 24, 1888. Serial ll'o. 286,257. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY TAYLOR KING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit or Ice Outters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in devices or machines for cutting fruit, 1ce, &c.; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and point-ed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention; and Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views of front and rear parts of the same, taken through the lines 0: ac and y y, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the cutting-cylinder, conical-shaped; and Fig. 6 is a like view of the cylinder having parallel sides.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the machine, and B the cutting cylinder, which may be made either parallel or conicalshaped, having a hollow interior and supported in a suitably-constructed frame.
1 is thefront part and 2 the rear end of the frame provided with suitably constructed legs or base portion-3. These end parts are preferably provided with suitable grooves 4, flaring or diverging upwardly from each side of the lower part of the cylinder. The two side portions 5, when placed in said grooves, are clamped therein by screw-rods 6, passing through holes 7 in the end parts 1 and 2; or any other suitable means may be employ ed for holding said parts together, forming a flaring hopper 8, above and around the cuttingcylinder, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The front part 1 of the frame is provided with a hole 9, through which the stem forming the front axis 10 of said cylinder passes, and having a propelling-crank 11 attached to its outer end. The rear end 2 of said frame is also provided with a round opening 12, in size to admit the large end 13 of the cylinder to pass through and rotate therein.
15 is a suitable band or collar, which is placed around the outer part of the rear end -of the cylinder and adapted to bear against the inner side surface of the end-frame part 2, preventing lateral play of said cylinder when rotating upon its axis.
The cylinder B may be formed of longitudinal sections or by bending a single piece of sheet metal or steel having its two ends united together, forming a hollow tube, either parallel or conical-shaped, as shown.
The front end of the cylinder is provided with a gudgeon or axis 10, having an enlarged inner end formed into a flange or rim 17, fitting into the cylinder and riveted or otherwise connecting the parts together, forming the cylinder B, as shown in the drawings, Figs. 1, 5, and 6.
I prefer using sheet-steel in the construction of said cylinder, and form the cuttingknives 16 integral therewith by the use of suitably-shaped tools or dies adapted to the purpose, which are made to cut through the metal of which the cylinder is made, raising the front cut portion thereof projecting beyond the outer convex surface of the cylinder, forming the knives 16, whereby receptacle-openings 18 are formed by the displacement of the metal forming said knives, and admitting the substance being cut to pass through said openings 18 to the interior of the cylinder B, and is discharged rearwardly through its open end 23, this being the leading novel feature of my invention.
In order to more readily discharge the substance being cut from the interior of the cylinder, I provide a suitably shaped spiral scraper 19, adapted to fit properly into said cylinder, having its small or front end 20 supported by fitting into a socket 21, formed in the upper inner end of the axis of the cylinder which revolves around said scraper, the rear end of which is rigidly attached to the frame of the machine.
When the cylinder is rotated on its axis, the spiral-shaped scraper, being held stationary, fitting the interior surface thereof, withdraws the substance being cut by the knives, which is discharged through the open end 23 of the cylinder.
22 is an inclined concaved receiver or spout located beneath the cylinder B, for the purpose of catching the liquid substance which escapes therefrom and is discharged at its lower end 14.
2% is a presser-lid for the hopper 8, and hinged to one of its sides or to one of the clamping-screw rods 6. Said lid is provided with a suitably-constructed spiral sprin 2" giving it suiiieient power to force the substance beneath the lid down upon the knives of the cylinder, as it is rotated by means of the crank 11, or may be driven by a belt or gear-wheels, if desired, in large-sized mawith the frame and hopper and a rotating cyl inder provi ded with integral cutting-knives on its surface and openings in front of said knives, of a spirally-formed scraper fitting the interior of said cylinder and adapted to discharge the material cut by the knives, substantially as described.
In a fruit or ice cutter, the combination, with the grooved and apertured front and rear parts 1 2 and the side portions 5 and rods (3, forming the frame and hopper, 0f the rotating cylinder mounted in the frame, the inclined eoncaved chute or spout below the cylinder, the spirally-formed scraper, and the spring-actuating presser-lid hinged to one side of the hopper and normally pressin g upon the material. in the hopper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY TAYLOR KING.
