PICTURE-CARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,185, dated December 24, 1889. Application filed August 3l, 1889. Serial No. 322,604. (No model.) Patented in Germany .Iuly 24,1889, No. 48,717.

Be it known that I, OTTO KAUEMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Cards, (for which Letters Patent were obtained in Germany under date of July 24, 1889, No. 48,712) of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved picture-card which is so constructed that the picture on the surface of the card may be changed into a pic-ture differingin colors and contours, so as to produce a veryeli'ective and pleasing effect; and the invention consists of a picture-card which is formed of two congruent pictures, of which one is on the rear wall of the card and the other on a transparent fabric in front of the same, said pictures being separated by an intermediate slidepiece which is guided in a frame attached to the rear part of the card.

`In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent front elevations of my improved picture-card, showing the same respectively before and after withdrawing the intermediate supporting slide-piece. Eig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 1l, Fig. l.

A represents a case or frame of suitable card-board, which is made in a manner corresponding to the leaves of photographalbums. l

On the inner surface of the rear wall of the case or frame A is printed a picture in suitable colors, which picture matches in its con tours, either partly or entirely, a similar picture l), which is printed on a sheet of transparent material B, such as line silk gauze, of that kind used as bolting-cloth- This sheet of transparent material is pasted to the under side of the front or mat of the case A, and is separated `from the lower picture by means of a non-transparent piece or plate of card-board C, which is guided in ways between the frame and prevented from being pulled out entirely by means of a stop-shoulder d at the inner edge, which abut-svagainst a shoulder d at the open end of the case A. The tints in which the picture on the transparent sheet is printed are preferably pro` duced in soft neutral colors, while the colors of the picture on the rear wall of the case A are printed in bright colors, so that when the intermediate slide-plate is drawn out the lower picture blends with the upper picture and imparts a bright and pleasant effect to the same, as the bright colors of the lower picture appear through the fine transparent gauze on which the upper picture is printed and are softened by the neutral tintsI of the upper picture.

A great many different combinations of pictures may be made. For instance, a child printed on the transparent sheet may be transformed into an angel if the congruent picture of the child on the lower sheet is provided with wings, while the figure on the upper picture has no wings. In a similar manner a restful forest landscape may be so changed that the same assumes on removing the slideplate the character of a hunting scene, or the dawn of morning may be changed into bright sunrise, dto., in which case the lower picture has the complementary figures and additions which are not shown on the upper picture. The bright or subdued character of the upper picture is brought out in relief by a proper tint or color of the int-ermediate slide-plate.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A picture-card composed of a case or frame provided with a picture on the rear wall of said case, a transparent sheet having a picture congruent with the contours of the lower picture, and an intermediate slide-plate that may be drawn out so as to produce the matching and blending' of the pictures, substantially as set forth.
