N. PETER5. Pmwuma m m, Waslli c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE VVQFISHER AND ELISHA MUNSELL, OF KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE;
SAW-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,635, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed July. 30, 1889. Serial No. 319,139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. FIsHER and ELISHA MUNsELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire,- have invented new and useful Saw-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in saw-guards, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the guard may be adjusted to the diameter of the saw-blade, and also to take up the wear on the blade.
The invention consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective View of our improved saw-guard in its operative position. Fig. 2 isasectional view 011 the line w m of Fig. 1.
In carrying out our invention we form in the top of the table or work-bench, adjacent to the saw, a transverse groove A, in which We secure the guide-plate B. This guide- I plate is provided inits upper side with a longitudinal dovetailed groove C, and near its ends has the slots or openings D, through which securing-screws are passed to fasten it to the table or workbench. Within the groove of this guide-plate B we arrange the slide E, the edges of which are dovetailed to fit the said groove, and thereby prevent the slide rising from the guide-plate. The slide, by this arrangement, is also permitted to move longitudinally of the guide-plate, so as to be adjusted to and away from the saw-an bor, according to the diameter of the saw, and it is held at any desired point of the guideplate by the set-screws F, mounted vertically in its ends and adapted to bind on the upper side of the guide-plate. The saw-guard G is secured rigidly to the upper face of the slide, and consists substantially of an L-shaped plate having its lower arm secured to the slide and projecting from the side'of the same beyond the edge of the guide-plate, and having a vertical arm tapered and arc-shaped, so as to follow the edge of the saw, as clearly shown. The inner concave edge of the vertical arm is beveled, so as to readily enter the division made in the board by the saw-blade.
The construction and arrangement of the parts of our device being thus made known, the operation of the same will, it is thought, be readily understood. The guide-plate is secured on the upper side of the work-bench adjacent to the saw-arbor, and the slide is adjusted so as to bring the guard adjacent to "the edge of the saw and then secured, as will be readily understood. The boards'are then fed to the saw in the usual manner.
It will be observed that our improved device is very simple in its construction, and that by its use the operator is enabled to quickly adjust the guard, so as to take up the Wear of the saw, and also to remove one guard and substitute therefor another guard of a different size to correspond with the diameter of the saw. 7
The device is intended to prevent the teeth of the saw from catching in the piece sawed off, or any other piece that may jar against the teeth, and for this purpose the vertical arm of the guard is arranged in rear of the saw-blade and in the same plane therewith. Serious accidents have frequently been caused by the saw-teeth catching the piece sawed off and throwing it violently toward the operator. These accidents are prevented by the use of the guard.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the guide-plate, the slide mounted thereon, and the guard secured to the slide and consisting substantially of an L-shaped bracket having its lower horizontal arm secured to the slide and having an are-- shaped tapered vertical arm, as set forth.
I11 testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WV. FISHER. ELISHA MUNSELL.
