CAR-ROOF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,928, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED P. LE GROs, of Louisville, in the county of J eiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Roof, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

I The invention relates to car-roofs such as shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 374,545, granted to me December 6, 1887.

The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved car-roof, constructed in such a manner as to permit the rapid draining of the car-roof during aheavy rain, at the same time greatly adding to the strength and durability of the roof.

The invention consists of rabbeted roofboards, painted canvas folded and fittedinto the rabbets, and a metallic cover arranged over the said canvas.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as .will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with parts broken out.

The improved car-roof A is provided with roof-boards B, provided at their adjoining edges with a rabbet 0, similar to the one shown and described in the patent above referred to. In the bottom of this rabbet O is placed a strip D, made of canvas or paper, and on top of this strip is placed a painted canvas E, folded and fitted into the rabbet and extending over the tops of the roofboards B, as is plainly shown in the drawings. On the top of this painted canvas E is placed a metallic strip F, folded and fitted into the rabbet and forming the cover for the painted canvas. The sides of the'metallie cover F extend a short distance on top of the roof-boards B, over the said painted canvas, and the surface-boards G, placed on the said canvas, extend with their inner edges over the sides of the metallic cover F, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. Nails or screws H are driven through the surface-boards G, the sides of the metallic cover F, and the canvas D into the roof-boards B, so as to secure the several parts in place.

The metallic cover F is preferably made of a thin sheet of copper, and serves the double purpose of protecting the canvas and paint in the rabbet and also of forming gutters for carrying oif the water rapidly during heavy rains. It is understood that the groove or gutter thus formed in the roof extends from the top center to the edges of the roof.

It is to be understood that the metallic strip F is made of the same length as the roof and surface-boards G, so as to entirely mover and protect the canvas from one end to the other. It will further be seen that the metallic cover F maintains the flexibility and elasticity of the roof, and at the same time adds to its durability by keeping the paint on the canvas soft and pliable and preventingit from becoming dry and hard. Having thus f ully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, substantially as herein described, of the rabbeted roof -boards, a cover, as E, for said boards fitted into the rabbet, and a protection-cover, as F, applied to the rabbet over the said cover E, substantially as set forth.

2. In a car-roof, the combination, with rabbeted roof-boards, of painted canvas folded and fitted into the rabbets, and a metallic cover fitted on top of the said painted canvas in the rabbet, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a car-roof, the combination, with rabbeted roof-boards, of painted canvas folded and fitted into the rabbets, a metallic cover fitted on top of the said painted canvas in the rabbets, and surface-boards extending over the sides of the said metallic cover, substantially as shown and described.
