UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM M. L. MCADAMS, OF SOUTH BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAGING-MACHINE.
SPECIFIQATION forming part of Letters atent No. 416,372, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed August 2, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. L. MO- ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paging- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- Vention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked .thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, Flg. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a front view, of such parts of a paging-machine as are necessary to illustrate my improvement. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of the type-shaft, turni11g'-plate, and leaf-turner.
My invention relates to paging-machines of the kind represented and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 87,693, dated March 9, 1869, and granted 'to John McAd'ams, and has for its object the free and quick movement of the type-shaft back and forth to enable the starting-point on the typechain to be expeditiously brought into position to commence or carry on the numbering of the pages of a book or of sheets of paper.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
In the dra-wings, A denotes the frame of the machine, parts of which are shown in the several figures.
B is the type-shaft provided with a fiat turning-plate C, which nloves or feeds the type-Chain D along intermittingly.
I'Ieretofore in some cases the type-shaft has been provided on one end with a prismatic portion E, (see dotted lines in Fig. 3,) to which, when it was desired to move the type-Chain backward, a crank F (also shown in dotted lines) was applied. In other cases a handle has been screwed into one of the fingers of the leaf-turner X for the purpose as shown in dotted lines at Y in- Fig. 2, and by moving and holding the spring G away from the prismatic part H of the said shaft by the camlever I it could be turned by the crank F or Serial No. 281,733. (No model.)
handle Y, so as to move the type-chain back to the starting-point. This operation required considerable time to accomplish, as one revolution of the crank or handle effected but one revolution of type-shaft.
In applyi-ng my invention or improvement to machines already constructed or now in use I reducethe length of the bearing K of the type-shaft and apply to that end of said shaft an extension L, which is connected to the shaft B, and at its other end is supported in a bearing in a bracket M, secured to the frame. On the extension L is secured a pulley N, partially about which and a much larger pulley 0 an endless belt P passes. The pulley O revolves on a bearing Q, supported in a slot R in a bracket S, secured to the frame of the machine. By means of the thumb nut T the bearing of the pulley O can be adjusted in the slot, so as to maintain 'a proper tension on the belt P. Fixed to one side of the pulley O is a handle U, by which the said pulley can be revolved by the hand of the attendant. Thus it will be seen that by my iniprovement the type-Chain can be moved or returned to the point of commencement in Very much less time than by the old method and will be productive of much saving in the aggregate.
In constructing new machines with my improvement the shaft B and extension would be made in one piece.
I-laving described my invention, whatl claim 1s- In combination with a paging-machine, the type-shaft provided with the extension L, the pulley N, secured thereto, the bracket M, supporting said extension, the bracket S, secured to the frame and having a slot, the bearing Q, arrangcd in said slot and having means of confining it therein and to the bracket, the pulley O, provided with the crank pin or handle for revolving it, and the belt P, all being arranged to operate essentially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. L. MCADAMS.
