SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,505, dated November 19, 1 889.
Application tiled August 5, 1889. Serial No. 319,821. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bevel-Squares, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot this specification.
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture; and it consists in providing a bevel-square having a strong, durable, and inexpensive means by which the blade may be quickly released or secured at any desired set in the stock.
lith these ends in view my invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of part-s, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

A represents the bottom portion of the stock, having about its outer edge portion a vertically-projected rib B and cross-bar C. In the space D between the bars C and E is placed a nut F, having a right-hand screwthread therein adapted to a similar thread G on the outer end portion of the rod H. On the inner end portion J of the rod H is provided a left-hand screw-thread K, adapted to a similar thread L in the inner end portion of a tightening-wedge M. Thelouter or free end portion of said wedge is divided by an elongated slota, through which the screw-bolt N is passed. It will be noticed that the wedge is graded on the upper side only, as shown from ,e to z. A wedge, as P, is provided having a similar grade on its under face and a perforation a', through which the screw-bolt N is passed, and by which the wedge P is secured against longitudinal movement. The top portion R of the stock is substantially as shown, having side ribs S, and 1s snnllar to the lower portion A, excepting the cross-bar C, and that the end portion in which the blade T is secured is beveled, as from 0c to w, and has a countersink for the head of the bolt N. The edge of the washer portion Uis beveled, as shown, to correspond with the beveled end of the upper portion of the stock. The outer half of the said edge is graduated, as shown. The prime object of thus beveling the edge of the washer is to provide a larger and more exposed surface upon which to place the degree marks and numbers, that they may be easily seen when in use. On the lower side of said washer is providedadownwardly-projected rib portion o, of such width as to fill the slot d in the blade, but a trifle thinner, so that when the parts are clamped between the upper and the lower portions of the stock the pressure will come on the bladeinstead of the rib b. The twoparts A and R of the stock are secured together by the screwbolt N and the rivets h, with the wedges M and P in position shown in Fig. 3, and the blade and washer between the portions P and U, as shown.
In operation, by turning the rod H, the wedge M will be moved under the wedge P, and by the use of the opposing threads G and L the movement of the wedge M is twice what it would be with a single screw. To secure the blade in desired set, the screw G is turned in by turning the knob NV, which movement will turn the left-hand thread K out of the wedge M, by which movement said wedge will be forced under the wedge `P and it against the blade and the washer against the lower face of the top portion of the stock, and by a reverse movement of the knob the wedge M will be drawn out, releasing the wedge P and the blade. It will be noticed that a slight rotary movement ot' the rod H is all that is required to move the wedge suiiiciently to secure or release the blade, the small opposing threads serving to give power as well as speed to the movement of the parts to an extent that could not be attained by a single thread.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a bevel- IOO square composed, essentially, of a stock formed of two portions, as A and R, the former having' a cross-bar C, rod ILhzwing at its outer end portion a. right-hand screwthread G and nut F and on its inner end a left-hand screwthread K, a. Wedge lportion M,
having' in the inner end thereof a similar thread L, Wedge P, adapted to rest upon the Wedge M, and for vertical adjustment the blade T and beveled-.edged graduated Washer 1o U, substantiallyas described, and for the purpose set forth.
