UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEOPHILI'S CHARLES EBERI IARDT, ()F UERO, TEXAS.
ENGRAVlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,450, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed December 21, 1888- Serial No. 294,296. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEOPHILUS CHARLES EBERHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuero, in the county of De \Vitt and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in En graying-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention, relates to an improvement in engraving-machines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed'out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an engraving-machine embodying my improvement, the platen being lowered and the machine arranged in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the platen raised. Figs. 3, 4t, 5, 6, and 7 are detail perspective views.
A represents a rectangular base-board of suitable size, on which is arranged a rectangular plate or table B, the latter being secured to the base A by screws and detachable from the said base.
0 represents a plate, which is arranged transversely under the table or plate B, near one end of the latter, is fitted between said plate B and the base A, and is provided at its ends with vertical arms D E, which rise from the plate B, and extend through notches or openings in the latter, as shown.
F represents the platen, which has one end pivoted between the upper ends of the arms D by screws G, having conical engaging ends fitting in similarlyshaped sockets in the platen, said screws working in threaded openings in the upper ends of the arms D, and having jam-nuts H, by which they may be secured at any desired adjustment. Screw-studs I are arranged in the outer corners of the platen F, project from the under face thereof, and are adapted to enter sockets K in the upper ends of the arms E when the platen F is turned downward on said arms E to a position parallel with the table or plate B. From the pivotal end of the platen projects anarm L, which is adapted to engage one side of the plate or table B when the platen is turned to its elevated position (shown in Fig. 2) and support the said platen in the said position.
M represents a plate, which is arranged transversely on the under side of the platen at a suitable distance from the outer end thereof, and has notches or rabbets N in its ends.
0 represents a clamp, which is also arranged on the under side of the platen, and is provided at its ends with right-angled arms P, that fit in the rabbets N. From the upper side of the clamp O, at the center of the same, projects a stem R, which extends through a central opening in the platen F, and on the outer end of the said stem is pivoted a lever S, the said lever having a cam T at its inner pivotal end adapted to engage a transverse pin U in the outer end of stem R.
V represents a pair of adj Listing-screws, which engage threaded openings near the outer corners of the clamp O, and have their inner ends bearing against the under side of the platen. A pair of spring-arms W have their inner ends secured to the under side of the platen and have their free ends bearing against the upper side of the clamp O, the function of the said spring-arms being to normally move the said clamp 0 from the platen.
The operation of this portion of my invention is as follows: A plate or other substance to be engraved is placed behind the plate M, with its ends projecting beneath the rabbets N, and by turning the lever S the operator causes the cams T to engage the cross-pin U', and thereby draw outward on the stem R and clamp O, and consequently cause the rightangled arms P of said clamp to bear on those ends of the plate which are over the rabbets N, and thereby clamp the said plate on the plate M.
X represents a rectangular plate of suitable size, which is fitted in a countersunk opening in the upper side of plate B and arranged upon the plate 0, the said countersunk opening being of sufficient depth to cause the up per side of plate X to be flush with the surface of plate 13.
Y represents a plate which is arranged on the plate B, and has a frame A around its edges, which is adapted to retain a paper, slate, or other surface on which a character, drawing, engraving, or other matter to be copied is printed, drawn, or otherwise inscribed.
B represents a pantograph, which comprises a pair of parallel bars 0 D,'of unequal lengths, a bar E, which has its ends connected to the said bars, and a bar F which is connected at and near one end to the outer ends of said bars. The inner end of the bar C is pivoted on a stud G, that rises from the plate B, near one corner thereof.
H represents screw-studs which pivot the bars F to the bars C D, and pivot the bar E to sleeve L at any desired adjustment by, a setengraving being'in reverse.
screw N.
0 represents an adj usting-screw, which is arranged midway between the arms E, and is adapted to bear under the free ends of the platen F.
The operation of my invention is as follows: WVhen the plate on which the engraving is to be made has been secured to the under side of the platen in the manner before described, the platen is turned down upon the arms E, the studs I entering sockets K in the upper ends of said arms and serving to secure the platen rigidly thereon. The plate X is ad- 3' usted vertically in a plane parallel to the plate M by turning the screws Y to cause the stylus K to engage equally at every point the surface of the said plate to be engraved, the depth of the cut made by the said st lus being regulated by the screw 0. The original from which the engraving is to be made or the slate or paper upon which any desired word is to be writtenbeing secured on the plate Y, the operator, by grasping the knob or sleeve L and tracing the said original or writing the desired word or symbol with the pencilpoint M, causes a reduced fac-simile thereof to be engraved on the plate or engraving-surface, as will be readily understood, the said If it is desired to have the engraving exactly alike the original and not in reverse, it may be accomplished by securing the block, plate, or surface to be engraved on the plate X and reversing the stud I and stylus K in such manner as to cause the stylus to bear downward on'said block, plate, or surface.
This apparatus is especially designed for.
engraving plates to be used for printing 2. In an engraving-machine, the platen, in
combination with the plate M on the under side thereof, the clamp-plate 0, having the stem R extending through the platen, and the lever pivoted on the said stem and having the cam to operate the clamp, substantially as described.
3. In an engraving-machine, the combination, with the platen, of the clamp-plate O on the under side thereof, the springs IV to normally move the clamp-plate from the platen, the stem R, projecting from the clampplate through an opening in the platen, and the lever pivoted on the said stem and havingthe cam to operate the clamp, substantially as described.
at. The combination, in an engraving-machine, of the platen having the plate M on its under side with rabbets N, the clamp-plate 0, having the right-angled arms P to engage said rabbets, the stem R, projecting from the clamp-plate through the platen, and the lever having the cam engaging the said stem, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the bed-plate C, having the arms or standards D E, the platen F, having'one end pivoted between the arms D, and having the studs I to engage sockets K in arms E, and the pantograph pivoted on plate or table B and having the stylus, substantiallyas described.
6. The combination, in an engraving-machine, of the table B, the bed-plate G, the platen F, the plate X on the former, having the adj listing-screws Y resting on bed-plate O, and the pantograph having the stylus arranged under the platen F and provided with the depending stud bearing 011 the plate X, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEOPHILUS OHARLES EBERHARDT.
