W. H. PRICE, Jr.
GOMPOSING STICK.
No. 414,254! Patented Nov. 5, 1889.
Wit may;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAU II. PRICE, JR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHANDLER & PRICE, OF SAME PLACE.
COMPOSING-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,254, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed March 23, 1889 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. PRICE, J r., of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composing-Sticks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the IQ same.
My invention relates to improvements in composing-sticks for printers; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described,
I 5 and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the stick complete. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the movable knee. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the clamping yoke and screw. Fig. 4 is a perspective in section, showing more especially the adjusting-screw of the knee.
A represents the bed or plate of the device, having preferably an integral side a and a solid end a, these members being substantially as heretofore constructed.
B is the movable knee, the same having a groove or recess Z) for receiving the one leg of the clamping-yoke C. From the central portion of recess 1) a lateral screw-threaded hole is made through the knee for receiving the adjusting-screw b. The clamping-jaw O is shaped approximately, as shown, to embrace the knee and side member a. A screw- 3 5 threaded hole in the one leg of the yoke receives the set-screw or clamping-screw c, the latter having thumb-pieceE for operating the Serial No. 304,432. (No model.)
screw. The thumb-piece is of the curved variety shown, by reason of which, when the thumb-piece is depressed in fastening the knee until the central portion of the thumbpiece engages plate A, the free end e of the thumb-piece will be so far separated from plate A that the operator with his thumb or finger can easily reverse the thumb-piece in loosening the screw. It is desirable to have the thumb-piece in tightening the screw turn down to an engagement with plate A, or to approximately such position, so as to be out of the way, and, screws b and 0 being in line by adjusting screw Z) in the first instance and afterward from time to time take up the wear, the thumb-piece can be brought to the desired position, meantime tightening the clamp.
What I claim is In a oomposers stick, the combination, with movable knee having recess Z) and adjustingscrew 1), of clampingyoke 0, having set screw 0, and curved thumb-piece E, for oper- 6o ating the screw, the thumb-piece by reason of its curvature being adapted to engage the thumb or finger of the operator, while the body of the thumb-piece rests upon the body of the stick, substantially as and for the pur- 65 pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of March, 1889.
WILLIAM H. PRICE, JR.
