CHARLES T. NIGHTINGALE, OF BINGIIAMTON, NEV YORK.
STOPPER AND FASTENER FO R BOTTLES, JARS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,954, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed March 9, 1889. gerial No. 302,617. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. NIGHTIN- GALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoppers and Fasteners for Bottles, Jars, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoppers and fasteners for bottles, jars, and the like; and it has for its object to produce a stopper and stopper-fastener which shall be simple in construction, durable, and easily applied and operated.
The invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the neck of a bottle or jar provided with my improved stopper. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the stopper. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the cap or stopper.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A designates the body of my improved stopper, which consists of a cap or plate, which may be stamped from suitable sheet metal, and which is provided on its under side with an annular rim, B, adapted to fit in the mouth of the jar or bottle to which the stopper is to be applied, and a surrounding annular flange, C, adapted to rest upon the rim D of the mouth of the jar or body The upper side of the cap A is provided with parallel longitudinal grooves F F, in which the link G is secured by means of a top plate, H, soldered or otherwise secured to the cap A. The ends of the link G project slightly be= yond the rim 0 of the cap A, so as to form the loops I and J.
K is a ring or collar, which is suitably secured upon the neck of the jar or body, and which is provided at diametrically-opposite points with the loops or recesses L M, in which are secured, respectively, the hingeplate N and the clasp 0. Each of these consists of a suitably-shaped plate provided near its lower end with notches or recesses mforming shoulders to engage the loops I. M upon the ring or collar K, which thereby retains the said hinge-plate and clasp securely in po-. sition. The hinge-plate N is provided at its upper end with an eye, P, in which the loop I of the link G is permanently hinged. The clasp O is provided at its upper end with a spring-catch, Q, adapted to engage the loop J of the link G and thereby retain the cover or stopper in a closed position. Both the h i ngeplate N and the clasp 0 may be constructed of spring metal to furnish the required elastieity forthc spring fastening device, as above Set forth.
Packing, R, of rubber or other suitable ma terial may be secured to the under side of the rim 0 of cap A, or to the entire underside of the said cap, or it may be loosely interposed between the said cap and the mouth of the jar or body to which the stopper is applied, as the exigencies of the case may demand.
The opera ion of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings. To open the stopper, it is only necessary to press the spring-catch sufficiently to disengage it from the loop J of link G, when the cap A will immediately open upon its hinge. To close the stopper, the operation is simply reversed.
This device is exceedingly simple in construction and may be manufactured at a tri fling expense.
The fastening is simple and secure and will be understood at a glance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In abottle-stopper, the combination, with the cap having an annular rim on its under side and provided with a surrounding annular flange, of alink secured transversely across the upper side of said cap and having its ends projecting beyond the edges of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the cap or stopper provided with longitudinal parallel grooves in its upper side, of the link secured in said grooves and extending beyond the edges of the said cap, substantially as set forth.
The combination, with the cap or stopper having longitudinal parallel grooves in its upper side, of the link secured in the said grooves and atop plate arranged over the said link, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the cap or stopper having projecting loops at diametricallyopposite points, of the hinge-plate and the clasp secured to the mouth of a jar or bottle, the saidcap or stopper being connected permanently to the hinge-plate by means of one of its projecting loops, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the cap or stopper having a link secured to its upper side and projecting at both ends, so to form loops at diametrically-opposite points of said cap, of the hinge-plate and the clasp secured to diametrically-opposite sides of the mouth of the bottle or jar, the said cap being permanently connected to said hinge-plate by one of the loops or its projecting link, the other end of said link being adapted to engage the catch or clasp, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the ring or collar secured upon the neck of a jar or bottle and provided with diametrically-opposite loops or recesses, of the hinge-plate and the springor cover being permanently connected with the hinge-plate by means of one of the projecting ends of the link secured to its upper side, the opposite end of said link beingadapted to engage the spring-clasp, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atfixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES T. NIGHTINGALE.
