TEMPORARY BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,043, dated May '7, 1889.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GILDE- MEYER, of Haddonfield, county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Temporary Binder, of which the following is a true and exact description, reftogether large sheets of paper in such a way that they will be at the same time securely fastened, easily removed, easily examined, and readily and conveniently placed on shelves, like ordinary books.

My invention will be best understood and described in connection with the drawings in which it is illustrated, and the novel features thereof are hereinafter clearly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device with the side covers removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the said device Fig. 3, a perspective View of the device filled with leaves of paper and with the side covers in place; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of a wire bent and formed as I prefer to employ it for forming the hingerods on which the said covers are secured.

A is the back of the binder, which is formed of a stout wooden bar and preferably transversely grooved, as is shown at A A. 011 the side edges of this rigid back I secure a hingerod of wire, preferably forming both the hinge-rods from a single wire, such as is shown in Fig. 4. This is readily done by boring parallel holes through the wooden back; then bending the wire at b 17 which are at thesame distance from each other as are the holes bored in the back; inserting the parallel ends of the wire through the holes, and then bending them at 5 b as shown, thus forming the two hinge-rods B and B. The

fact that the two ends of the wire I) b are not joined together does not interfere with the practical continuity and strength of the hinge-rod B, because, as is shown, the rod is practically inclosed from end to end by a sheetnnetal hinge-plate, 0, between the ends of which the edge of the cover D is inserted and secured by rivets c. This method of securing the side covers to the back is decidedly advantageous where the temporary binders are in frequent use, being at once strong and simple and free from the liability to split and crack which a leather hinge is subject to.

To return to the binding device proper, I secure on one edge of the rigid back one or more plates, E, preferably securing these plates over the ends of the slots A, where they are used. In a bearing formed in this plate or plates I secure the journal '6 of a screw, I, in such manner that the said screw will project at right angles to the plate and be secured in it against longitudinal movement, while at the same time it can turn freely therein. Below the screw I, I secure to the plate or plates E a guide-rod, F, so that it will extend out from the plate parallel to the screw I. Preferably, I provide an additional plate, G, opposite to the plate E, to which the end of the guide-rod F can be secured. This, however, is not necessary.

H and H are the clamping-jaws. As shown, the jaw H is formed integral with the plate E, but obviously could be made of a separate piece and secured to said plate or to the back or to the screw and guide-rod. The other clamping-jaw, H, is made with a threaded perforation, h, adapted to fit upon and engage with the thread of the screw I. Another perforation, h, is formed in this clamping-jaw, so as to fit upon and slide along the guiderod F. I

J is a key adapted to fit on the end 2'' of the screw I. The conformation of the end t" should be such as to fit in and engage with the key J. The particular form is not important.

In use, the leaves to be secured together are placed between the jaws H and H. The screw I is then turned by the key J, and in turning the jaw H is screwed up toward the jaw H, clamping the papers tightly between them. The guide-rod F prevents the jaw H from bending out of line and causes it to move in a straight line backward or forward, according as the screw is turned in one direction or the other.

It will be seen that my device is exceed-- F, secured to plate E at one end and extending therefrom parallel to screw 1, a jaw, 11', and a jaw, ll, having a threaded perforation, 71, adapted to fit on and engage with screw I, and a perforation, 71, adapted to fit and slide on guide-rod F.

A temporary binder having a rigid back, A, with one or more transverse slots, A, in combination with a plate, E, secured to the edge of the back over the end of a slot, A, a screw, I, journaled at one end, 17, in said plate, and having its other end, 11 shaped to engage with a key, a guide-rod, F, secured to plate E at one end and extending therefrom paral- 101 to screw I, a jaw, II, and a jaw, ll, having a threaded perforation, h, adapted to fit on and engage with screw I, and a perforation, h, adapted to fit and slide on guide-rod F.

A temporary binder having a rigid back, in combination with a wire hinge-rod secured on the edge of the back, a sheet-metal hingeplate, C,a side cover, 1), secured to said hingeplate, a plate, E, secured to the edge of the back, a screw, I, journaled at one end, 1', in said plate, and having its other end, 11, shaped to engage with a key, a guide-rod, F, secured to plate E at one end and extending therefrom parallel to screw 1, a jaw, H, and a jaw, H, having a threaded perforation, h, adapted to fit on and engage with screw 1, and a perforation, h,adapted to fit and slide on guiderod F. i
