ATENT OF AMBER, MICHIGAN.
DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,747, dated May 7, 1889.
Application tiled June 5, 1888. Serial No. 276,065. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. LAGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amber, in the county of Mason and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tool and Tool-Holder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to t-he letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination tools and tool-holders, and is designed to produce a tool and holder which shall combine in a compact and practical form a wrench with a socket adapted to receive and operate a screw-driver, auger, and bits and dies for cutting screw-threads; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a top View of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical section on line .fr of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4, a bottom view of a portion of Fig. 1 with dies in place; Fig. 5, a bottom view with dies removed; Fig. 6, a horizontal section on line y y of Fig. 1 with reversible pawl and its spring in place.
Similar letters represent identical parts in all the figures.
LetterA represents the upper cylindrical part; letter B, lower square; C, central connecting-stem; D, handle or lever; E, removable head; F, dies for cutting screw-threads; G, reversible pawl.
Working freely in cylinder A, Fig. 1, is a central round stem, C, extending downward, as shown in Fig. 3, partly through the lower square, B, and fitting into a square socket in said square B by a square terminal or shank, o. This shank 0 is rigidly secured to B Vby a screw, n, which is removable at pleasure.
At the lower terminal of the cylindrical part of stem C, and separating it from the 5o square shank o, is a flange, p, Figs. 1 and 3, which serves to steady and strengthen the device.
In the lower part of square B, beneath said shank o, and separated from it by a shoulder 5 5 in B, is a square recess, m, the purpose of which is to receive screw-cutting dies F or bolt-heads 0r clamps for augers or bits of any kind, and these dies or clamps are held in position and adjusted by means of adjusting- 6c screw t', Fig. et, and keys g g, which engage the slot h, Fig. 3.
Surrounding and worked into the stem C, below the line of pivots or trunnions Z, is a ratchet-belt, a, into which, when the stem is revolved, as hereinafter shown, the reversible pawl G, pivoted at Z9, engages. This pawl is operated by a spring, c, which works in recess CZ, as shown in Fig. 6. A screw, f, Fig. 2, en-
gages the groove e in stem C and retains the 7o latter in position.
The device is operated by means of the handle or oscillating lever D and ratchet and pawl, before described, as shown in Figs. 1,
2, and 6. This handle is bifurcated and pvoted to cylinder A on trunnions Z Z, and may be operated either at right angles to the cylinder, or when the point of operation will not permit of such position the handle may be extended at or in the direct longitudinal line 8o of the cylinder, or at an angle thereto, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, and this changeable position of the handle or lever constitutes a peculiar, simple, and beneficial feature of my invention.
When the lever is used at right angles to the cylinder, the left hand of the operator, pressing upon the removable head E, fitted into' upper end of cylinder or stem C, will hold the dies or bits firmly to their work, and 9o when it is desirable to extend the lever upward in line w x, Fig. 1, any implement or tool handle may be inserted in the hole at the end of the lever to give the operator firmer purchase in revolving the stem.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
