CHALK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,686, dated May 7, 1889. Application led December 2, 1887. Renewed August 31, 1888. Serial No. 284,285. (No model.)
To all wiz/0772, t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP E. N nWsoM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to chalk-holders used in connection with billiard-tables; and it oonsists of an improvement in a device for which Letters Patent No. 371,150 were issued October et, 1887, as hereinafter fully set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a chalk-holder having my improvements, certain parts being removed. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the mechanism of the holder. Fig. 3 is a central section on line c a? of Fig. 1.
A designates the casing, within which is secured a frame, B, in which a rotative shaft, a, has its bearings. On the shaft a is mounted a reel or spool, C, upon which the cord is wound to which the chalk-cup is attached. A. spring, D, is placed on shaft a, adjacent to the reel O, one end of the spring being secured to the shaft, and the outer end being attached to a cross-bar, b, of the frame.
E indicates a gear-wheel, which is loose on the shaft a and engages with a pinion, c, on a shaft, d, which has a gear-wheel, f, mounted thereon. The wheel f engages with a pinion, g, on a shaft, h, on which shaft is mounted a governing device, 7c, by which the force of the spring and the speed of rotation of the reel are controlled as the cord ln is being wound upon t-he reel.
To the wheel E is secured a spring-pawl, m,
in position to engage with a ratchet-wheel, 1u, which is fast on shaft a, the parts being so constructed that when shaft a is rot-ated in one direction by drawing out the cord n the ratchet and pawl do not engage, and consequently the wheel E is not rotated; but when the cord is being Wound on the shaft a by the action of the spring, causing a reverse movement of shaft a, the pawl 'm engages with the wheel p, and motion is imparted through gear-wheels c, f, and g to the governor k.
As Will be seen, the governor is only necessary for the proper operation lof the chalkholder mechanism when the chalk-cup F is released after being used and the cord n is being wound upon the reel, which is rotated by the expansion of the spring; and by the construct-ion shown the wheel E, the governor k, and connecting-gearing are not in motion when the cord is drawn out, but operate only when the cord is being wound, and thereby much wearing of the governor and connecting-gearing is avoided, and in using the chalk the cord is unwound with great ease and rapidity.
vI claim- In the mechanism of a chalk-holder, a reel mounted on a shaft, a., provided with a ratchet-wheel, in combination with a governor mounted on a shaft which is connected by gearing with a wheel, E, on shaft a, and a pawl attached to wheel E and in position to engage with the ratchet-wheel, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig- -nature in presence of two witnesses.
