ELECTRICAL GAS-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,332, dated April 30, 1889.

Be it known that I, DANIEL O. KNOWLTON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrical Gas-Lighters, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for igniting gas by electricity; and it consists in the adaptation of a fixed and a movable electrode placed in electrical circuit through an oscillating lever-arm of ingenious and simplified construction arranged to establish momentary contact of said electrodes in the process of lighting the gas.
The electrodes in gas-lighters have been heretofore made similar to those illustrated; but the lever has been complex and costly, While the valve arrangement operated by the same lever has a ratchet-and-pawl or similar arrangement for its operation, whereas in my device less expense and more simplicity are obtained with better results; also, by one distinct movement of the lever the gas is shut off or turned on and ignited, whereas in those now in use two or more operations are required.
I attain my object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the mechanism, the electrodes being apart after ignition of the flame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view of lever and spring. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 exhibit modifications of the construction, while Figs. 7 and 8 are transverse and longitudinal sections of the modified levers.

. is the lever fixed by the screw 13 to the 15 is a stop-pin fixed to burner 1.- In my modified forms the lever 12 may be constructed with an arched slot, 14, to receive the said stop-pin.
16 is a plate-spring with an indented end fixed at one end to the lever 12 and having the other end resting against stop-pin 15.
18 is the electrode, which is arranged around the end of lever 12 and serves as the positive pole of the circuit.
The operation of my mechanism may be thus described: The gas passing through inlet 10 passes through the duct of the valveplug 8, which is opened by turning lever 12 to the left, and the electrodes 5 and 18 are brought in contact with each other by said lever 12, and the circuit is closed until some time after the lever has passed from a perpendicular position and thus charged to a high degree, and when the electrodes separate the resultant spark readily ignites the issuing gas. When the lever 12 is as far as desired, the pin 15 holds it from further movement and keeps it in place by the spring 16 clutching it. When it is desired to shut off the gas by movement of lever 12 to the right, the valveplug 8 closes over the inlet 10, and any furt-her movement to right or any swinging motion of the lever 12 is checked by pin 15 in a similar way to that described heretofore when lever is moved to the left.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, 1s-
A gas-burner and a cock controlling the passage of gas through the same, in combination with a lever attached to said cock and pivoted thereby in said burner, a pair of electrodes attached to said burner and said lever, a fixed pin, and a notched spring attached to said lever and engaging said pin, one of said notches being arranged to hold the cock open and the other to hold it closed by engaging with said pin, substantially as set forth.
