Wf- Essss UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM H. GLlNES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NEoKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,491, dated April 16, 1889.
Application iiled January 17, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. GL1NEs,of Boston,in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new' and useful Improvement in Necktie-Holders, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of a necktie provided With my improvement; Fig. 2, an elevation showing the improvement in use with a collar; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the holder detached; Fig. 4, an elevation showing the holder in use, the head of the stud being removed; and Fig. 5,a vertical transverse section of the holder.
Like letters and iigures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different iigures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of scarf or necktie holder which is designed to secure the tie in position on the collar; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap, and effective device of this character.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the necktie; B, the holder considered as a whole, and O the collar.
The holder is designed for use with neckties of any construction, and consists, primarily, of a plate or body portion, b, provided on its upper edge with two upwardly-proj ecting ears, CZ, disposed near the center thereof. Between the ears d the upper edge of the holder is horizontal at f to receive the shank of a collar-but- Serial No. 296,627. (No model.)
ton, m, when flattened or squared as shown in Fig. 2. Centrally between the ears d in the upper edge of the holder is formed a circular groove or depression, o', adapted to receive the shank of a collar-button, when rounded in the ordinary manner, as shown in Fig. 4. To the rear of the plate bis hinged a longitudinally-arranged pin, m, adapted to be detachably secured in a loop, p, in the usual manner, and by means of which the holder is attached to the necktie. On the front of the holder, and to the lower edge thereof, are secured two upwardly-turned lugs or hooks, t, which, when in use, engage the collar O on the lower edge and prevent the tie from moving laterally.
In use the holder is secured to the rear side of the tie A by means of its pin m, the ears cl being uppermost. The tie is then adjusted around the collar by means of its strap D, and the holder disposed so that its iiattened portion f, or the groove will receive the shank of the collar-button x. As the tie is tightened around the collar by means of its strap D, the holder will more closelyT engage the shank of the stud, being prevented from slipping therefrom by the ears d and securely hold the tie in position or preventit from riding up on the collar. The hooks t at the same time engage the lower edge of the collar and prevent the lower end of the tie from swinging to one side and becoming displaced.
Having thus explained my invent-ion, what I claim is- The holder B, comprising the body l), provided With the ears d, horizontal portions f, groove fI, and hooks t, and an attaching-pin on said body for securing it to the necktie, substantially as described.
W'ILLIAM l-l. GLINFS.
