arm, c, is hinged, so as to adnit the base of the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Lamp-l:lolders for Vehicles, of which the following is a full and exact specification, reference being had to the acconipanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the lamp holder with lamp leld therein suspended froni the under side of a vehicle. It also shows in dotted lines the position of the holder when not in use raised up and fastened to the under side of the vehicle. Fg. 2 represents the holder without the lanp, showing the strap released and the holder-arm `provided withan adjusting deviee by which the length may be altered. Fig. 3 represents a modified form of holder, in which the suspended brackethas simply a right-angle foot on the end upon which the lanip rests, and a strap passed through a slot in the bra-chet, -whereby the lainp may be secured to the holder. Fig. i represents anodified form of a t'ork on the end of the bracket which is made in the shape of and about three-fourths of a circle and provided with a hinge, so that it may be opened and the base of the lanp inserted. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the form of fork usually enployed, which is senicircular in shape and provided with a strap on one end and a buckle on the other.

It will be noticed by a reference to the drawings that'the snap-hook c'attaehed to the laterally-projecting arm c at its end, is so located as to stand immediately above the center of the circle described hy the arms 'of the fork, so that when the lamp is placed in the holder, as shown in Fig. l, the bail of the lanp will be eugaged by the snap-hook 0 and held in a perpendicular position. The bolt B passes through a perforation, e in the laterally-extending arni c, and is firnily Secured thereto by the thumb-nut b screwed on the end of said bolt. At the point where the arm c joins the bracket C a hinge, D, may be provided, which will pernit the holder to be raised to a horizontal position and secnred to the under side of the floor of the yehicle by the hool; F when not in use.

Referring to Fig. 2, vided with an adjusting device, whereby the length of said bracket may be increased or shortened, so as to make the holder fit any lantern. In Fig. 2 the form shown consists of a sleeve, c secured to the upper portion of the bracket C, into which the lower portion, o of the said bracket fit-s', andin which it may be sustained in any position by the set-screw c Referring to Fig. 3, a modified form of construction is there shown, in which, however, the same invention is employed. The boltB in this case, instead of passing through the floor of the vehicle froni the top, passes through froni the bottom and has a thumbnut screwed on its end above the floor. The head ot' the bolt B below the floor of the vehicle is provided with an extension which forms one-half of a hinge, by which the lantern-holder is suspended froni the Vehicle. This hinge however, if desired, may belocated, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, below arigid part of the bracket, which is secured to the under side of the Vehicle. The form of bracket shown in Fig. 3 dilters from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in that, instead of having a Ol'l at its lower end, which encircles and together with the sti-ap sustains the lantern, it is provided with a singlelaterally-extendiug arm, E, at right angles to the bracket,

When it is desired to employ my invention,

- the bolt B is passed through a hole in the floor of the vehicle, the lantern-holder placed thereon on the under side and se eured thereto by the thumb-nut b When not needed for use, the rod C is raised up horizontally and engaged by a hook, F, or other suitable de- Vice on the under side of the floor of the Vehicle, by which it is sustained in a horizontal position. When a lantern is to be attached to it, the rod C is let down to a perpendicular position, the lantern-bail is placed in the snaphook 0 and the strap 0 buckled into the buckle 0 firmly around the base of the lantern. The lantern will thus be held rigidly in a perpendieular position and it may be easily detached from the device for use in any other connection.

My invention has the advantage of simplieity and the additional very material advantage of making it possible to employ an ordinary lantern, such as is used in every stable to light the road when driving at night. Its location beneath the wagon makes it unneoessary to screen the eyes from the lamp, and its nearness to the ground gives the best possible illumination for driving.

I am faniliar with patent granted to J. and A. F. Moser November 22, 1887, No. 373,472, and hereby disclaim everthing shown therein.

Having thus described my invention, what I desire to prooure by Letters Patent is- 1. A holder for vehicle-lanterns, eonsisting of a bracket Suspended from the under side of the floor of a vehicle and having a laterallyextending arm at its top, the end of which is provided with a snap-hook in position to engage the bail of the lantern when in a perpendieular position, and provided on its lower end with a laterally-extending fork in position to partially enercle the base of the lantern when Suspended in a vertical position from the snap-book, in eombination with a strap and buokle secured io the ends of the fork`,whereby the lantern may be seourely held within the fork, substantially as described.
