FREIGHT-CAR LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 400,077, dated. March 26, 1889.
Application filed December 1, 1887- Serial No. 256,715. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB HAISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Freight-Oar Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to looks or bolts for closing the doors of railway-cars, and pertains more especially to freight-cars.
In the drawings, Figure l is a partial side elevation of a freight-car provided with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views.
The door is carried back and forth on the the usual track and friction-rollers.
In Fig. 1 the door IV is represented as closed.
J is a plate attached to the exterior of the car I by means of end staples, L L, and provided with the recess or slot K, adapted to receive the bolt B of the door-lock. .The doorlock is constructed and operated as follows:
0 is a box constructed of two parts, as shown in Fig. 2, and adapted to form the main seat for the horizontal engaging-bolt B, and is bolted externally to the door IV in such suitable relation to the side of the car that when the door is closed such bolt may be caused to engage the recess K in the plate J.
In the interior walls of the box 0, and exterior to the side of the boltB therein,is formed the annular recess Q, which serves as the seat of the coiled spring E, which surrounds the central horizontal portion of the bolt B, and is suitably attached at one end thereto. The bolt B projects each way beyond the sides of the box 0, and at one end is provided with the hook or angular projection I-I, adapted to.

In suitable relation to the lastnamed end of the bolt B is attached to the exterior of the door a cleat, 0, having formed therein a lateral horizontal recess, D, and adjacent to the bolt B a vertical recess, D. recess D is adapted to hold the bolt B when in position of non-engagement with the car I, and the vertical recess D is adapted to hold said bolt when in position of engagement with said car.
N is a sealing band. of proper material adapted to be passed around the upright portion B of the bolt B through the keeper M, formed on the outside of the cleat O, and through .the staple P, driven in the door W, and returned and fastened in any suitable way upon itself at R.
In Fig. 1 my invention is shown'in the position of locking the door. When it is designed to open the door, the seal is broken and the bolt pushed to the left, slipping in the box 0, the springE yielding for that purpose, and when the bolt is moved, as aforesaid, sufficiently to be disengaged from the recess D in the cleat C the handle A is drawn outward, and the hook II thereby rotated from behind the engaging cross-bar F, formed in plate J, across the recess K therein, when, the bolt B being thus disengaged from the car I, the spring E throws said bolt into the recess D in the cleat G, where it is held in position of disengagement with the car 1' until again required to be fastened thereto.
G is a wed ge-shaped lug formed on the outer face of the plate J, with its outer wall tapering upward and its lower face square, thus creating the lateral recess or slot K, in which the adjacent end of the bolt B rests when the door is locked. lVhen the bolt B is withdrawn, as aforesaid, the hook or engaging end of the bolt B is thrown up and outside of the lug G, and when it is desired to lock the door the handle A is lifted upward until the part B of the bolt B is vertical, and the hook H passes down the oblique side of the lug G, and the bolt B is drawn thereby in the direction of the recess K (the spring E yielding for that purpose) until said bolt is withdrawn from the recess D, when the hook II is drawn into the recess K under the lug G, and the vertical portion B of the bolt B is forced into the recess D by the force of the spring E, when the door is locked, as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom of recess K may be used to engage hook H and bar F omitted.
The absolute locking of freight --cars is largely being abandoned, for the reason that loaded cars are shipped to different consignees, and it is impracticable to have the key accompany the car in every instance, and the consignee is therefore compelled to break and destroy the lock. A simple method of sealing the door, similar to that shown in my invention, is vbecoming generally adopted; but if it be desired in any instance to lock the door the bolt B can be fastened in any obvious mode in the recess D or in the recess K.
The advantages of my invention are simplicity, ease of operation, convenience of access to its different parts, and its inherent strength to resist the disposition of the door to shake loose in the jarring consequent upon transportation.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi'the United States, 1s
1. The combination of the plate J, provided with the recess K and cross-bar F, the box 0, provided with recess Q, the bolt B, having angular end seated in said box, the clcat C, provided with recesses I) and D, and spring E and the lug G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the freight-car I, the plate J, rigidly attached to said car near the door opening therein and provided with the recess K, the door \V, provided with cleat 0, having recesses I) and I) therein, and a bolt, B, seated on said door and provided with the engaging end II, and adapted to engage the said recess K when said door is closed, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the box 0, seated on the door \V, and provided with recess Q therein, the bolt B,pivotal1y seated in said box and provided with the engaging end ll, the spring E, the plate J, itlfiXGd. to the car I, and pro vided with recess K and engaging-bar F, and the cleat 0, provided with recesses D and 1), whereby said bolt is adapted to be partially rotated and held in and out of engagement with the car I, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
4. In combination with the car I, having formed cxteriorly thereon the recess K and engaging-bar F, the door provided with rock-bolt B, having the engaging end II, and the lug G, said bolt being adapted, substantially as shown, to be drawn and held in and out of engagement with said recess K, for the purpose described.
