W. H. BURK. EXTENSION TABLE.
Patented Aug. 27, 1889.
UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM HENRY BURK, OF SHEBOYGAN, VISCONSIN.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,911, dated August 2'?, 1889.
Application led February 9, 1889. Serial No. 299,294. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it htay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY BURK, of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and in the State of fisconsin7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EX- tension-Tables; and Il do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to extension-tables, and it will be hereinafter described With reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represent-s a plan view of an extension-table drawn out ready for the insertion of its detachable leaves and partly broken away 5 Fig. 2, a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l 5 Fig. 3, asection on theline 3 3, Fig. 2, showing certain of the parts broken away; Fig. 4, a detail plan view of one of the slide-blocks; Fig. 5, a section taken on line 5 5, Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a side elevation of one of the slide-blocks partly broken away.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the perlnanentleaves of an extension table; B, the grooved slides; C, the grooved guide and stop blocks for said slides, and D the support arranged intermediate of said permanent leaves.
With the exception of the guide and stop blocks, the parts above described are of the usual construction, and therefore I deem it unnecessary to particularly describe lthe saine in this application.
Each of the guide and stop blocks C is sawkerfed for a portion of its length to torina spring-tongue h, and while I haveshown both a right-angular and diagonal saw-kerf, it is obvious that the same may be either curved or straight without departing from the spirit of my invention. The face cof the V-shaped groove on the tongue side of said block is cut downfor the greater portion of its length to leave a space between this face and the opposing face of the slide-groove, thereby ott setting the spring-tongue. By this construction I lessen the frictional contact of the guide and stop blocks with the slides, and in case the parts bind when the table is being extended or closed up the strain will more readily come upon the springstongues h and the yield of the latter overcome the difculty, while at the same time the saw-kerfs in said blocks compensate for the expansion and contraction of said parts, and said tongues norinally eXerta pressure sufficient to keep said slides from working loose on each other when the table is moved about.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A guide and stop block for extension-table slides, cut out to forni a spring-tongue integral therewith, and having one face of the groove on its tongue side cut away for a certain distance of itslength to offset said sprin tongue, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM HENRY BURK.
