S. W. PARSONS.
SWING.
No. 408,742. PatentedAug. 13, 1889'l llllllllllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL IV. PARSONS, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,742, dated August 13, 188.9.
Application filed February '7, 1889. Serial No. 298,957. (No model.)
T0 all whom t ntay concern: Q
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of lVashtenaw and State of hiIiclligan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of swings; and the invention consists in the peculiar provision made for automatically operating it, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective drawing, and Fig.
2 is a vertical central cross-section, of my improved swing.
A is a cross-beam, and B the legs, of a scaffold of the usual kind for supporting swings.
C are eyebolts secured to theI under side of the cross-beam in pairs near the outer end of the cross-beam.
D is theswing-vehicle provided with suitable seats.
E are suspension-rods provided with eyes F at opposite ends, by means of which they are engaged in eyes C of the cross-beam, and at the eyes G, formed in the ends of suitable straps secured near the corners of the vehicle. The suspension-rods cross each other, so that the shifting of the weight in the vehicle readily disturbs the balance of the swine'.
To assist in starting and increasing automatically a swinging motion of the vehicle, I provide one or both pairs of suspension-rods on opposite ends of the vehicle with a swinging cross-bar H, adj ustably secured upon the rods E preferably by means of a short chain I, provided with a link J of suitable size to loosely engage upon the rods E andadapted to be held thereon by any one of the pins or teeth a projecting at intervals on the outside of these rods.
rlhe adjustment of the cross-bar His not only provided for the purpose of adjusting the device in convenient relation to the sitter, but also for the purpose of increasing or decreasing its effectiveness according to its adjustment higher or lower. The person in using this device adopts the method of the trapeze performer in throwing his weight backward or forward, as is necessary to disturb the balance of forces.
What I claim as my invention is In a swing, the combination, with the scaffold, of the suspension-rods crossed, as shown, the 'vehicle carried by the lower ends of said rods, the projections a on said rods, the bar II, arranged transversely of the vehicle, and the chains I, attached at one end to said bar and at the other provided with links loosely engaging the rods and adjustable vertically thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of .I un c, 1888.
SAMUEL IV. PARSONS.
