CRACKER-CUTTING DIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,929, dated July 30, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HERRMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cracker-Outting Die, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to dies used in crackercutting machines, and has'for its object to provide a die of this character which may be quickly repaired or partially refaced should it be broken by contact with hard substances in the dough or otherwise.
The invention consists in a cracker-cutting die provided with a face built up of removable sections which may easily be renewed when broken and by any ordinary workman, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a bottom plan view of a portion of a cracker-cutting die made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the die taken on the line a: QB in Fig. 1, the die being shown in normal position of use; and Fig. 3 is abottom perspective view of one section of the die-face.
In its general form the cracker-cutting die shown but in part in Fig. 1 of the drawings is quite similar to other dies of this characterthat is to say, it has a box-like main portion A, at the bottom face of which the crackercutter or die proper is placedand it is alsoprovided at its upper part and at one side with a horizontal flange B, provided with a series of pins 0, which as the die is reciprocated vertically make air-holes in the sheet of pastry traveling along on an endless bed and prior to the cutting out of the crackers by the die, the holes made by the pins 0 coming at the centers of the cut crackers. The pins or plungers and the stripper-plate, which push the cut crackers from the die and clear it of scrap dough, are not shown in the drawings, as these form no part of my invention.
It is well known that dies of this character have considerable area at their cutting-face, which is subdivided into many crackersh apes to cut from ten to thirty or more fancy crackers each time the die-face descends through the sheet of dough. This dough, though usually sifted, often contains hard substances, which, when struck by the sharp internally-serrated edges of one or more of the individual crackerdies, breaks them and renders the entire die practically useless unless its whole face be ground down level with the deepest brokenaway portion of its face and the individual dies be afterward dressed up again or reshaped and refinished. These operations re quire much time and skilled labor, and are therefore quite expensive, and it is to obviate these disadvantages that my sectional crackerdie is specially designed.
It will be understood that my improvement is applicable to dies designed to produce a number of crackers of any ordinary form, such as round, oval, square, or any fanciful shape having serrated or scalloped edges. As a fair example of the invention, I show the individual cracker-dies on the main die made in round fornrwith interior radial projections to produce round scallop-edged crackers.
I make the whole face of the die except its two end portions in transverse sections D, each of which is formed so as to bisect the center of two adjacent individual crackerdies d (1 at the center of the main die and two half-round individual die portions (1' d at opposite edges of the die, and which complete the cutting of one row of the crackers as the main die is reciprocated.

I purpose making the die-face sections about from one-half to three-quarters of an inch or one inch deep and to connect each section to the face of the die-box A by a couple 7 of screws F F, passed through the side walls of the box and entering threaded holes in the backs of the die-sections, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
I am not limited to using screws for fastening the removablesdie-sections to the box or body of the die, as any other equivalent or suitable means for attaching the sections may be adopted within the scope of my invention;
movingtheir screws F and set in other good die-sections, which, before they are screwed in place, may be dressed down at the back to. bring their cutting-edges truly level with the old undamaged sections which may have been worn more or less by use. This substitution of one or more die-sections D, which may be quickly and easily effected, makes practically a new main die, thus saving much expense ily be understood.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cracker-cutting die provided with a face consisting of removable or renewable sections having their joints on lines bisecting the openings of the individual cracker-dies, and means for fastening the removable sections to the'die box or body, substantially as herein set forth.
2. A cracker-cutting die provided with a face consisting of removable or renewable sections each made with scrap-openings at its center, and provided at opposite edges with halves or sections of the individual cracker-dies, and means for fastening the re movable sections to the die box or body, substantially as herein set forth.
3. A cracker-cutting die provided with a face consisting of removable or renewable sections having their joints on lines bisecting the openings of the individual crackerdies, and provided at the walls of the individual dies with radial or projecting cutters giving scalloped or ornamental. marginal form to the crackers, and means for fastening'the removable sections to the die box orbody,
substantially as herein set forth.
4:. A cracker-cutting die provided with a face consisting of removable or renewable sections having their joints on lines bisecting the openings of the individual crackerdies, and fastening-screws passedthrough the Walls of the dieinto the section's,substantially as herein set forth;
