TOOL-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,842, dated July 30, 1889;
Application filed April 29, 1889. Serial No. 309,048. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ANTON SCHUERMANN, of the city of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tool drivers in which a spirallygrooved shaft is intermittently rotated in one direction by reciprocating motion of the hand longitudinally on the shaft; and the said invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my device. Fig. 2 is a similar section of a fragment of the driver, showing the clutch disconnected. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on broken line a in Fig. 1, showing peculiarities of the clutch. Fig. etis a central longitudinal section through the toolgripper, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the gripper 011 broken line Y in Fig. 1.
The shaft a has the spiral grooves b b, that are concave on one side and abruptly plane on the other, as shown in Fig. 3. The driveclutch comprises the collar 0, having the ribs d adapted to the grooves of the shaft, the annular band or flange e, and the radial clutch projections f, that conform to and co-operate with like depressions h in the end of thimble g. The thirnble has the enlarged bore g, that permits both rotary and reciprocating motion in the flange of the clutch-collar, and it is encircled by handle t'. The lower end of. the drive-shaft is threaded, as shown at a, and is screwed into head 70. The head is slotted at its lower end to receive gripping-jawsl m, and is tapered as shown.
The shell 07. is secured to the head by screws 0 0, or in any other similar manner, and it tapers in conformity to the taper of the head.

against which the end of the shaft bears.
. Jaw l approximates a right-angled triangle in side elevation, and it rests in the angle of jaw m. Both jaws conform to the taper of the shell, both are grooved longitudinally, as indicated in Fig. 5, and each presents its opposing surface parallelly to the other.
The upper end of the shaft is smooth and diminished, and it fits in a short sleeve 19, that has the flange q. A screw 0" holds the flange on the shaft, and the head 3, secured to the flange by screws 6 t provides a handle, by means of which the tool may be guided and pressure may be applied.
In operation the handle z' is continuously reciprocated while held against rotary motion. As it is forced downward, as indicated in Fig. 1, the clutch projections of collar 0 engage the depressions of thimble g and impart rotary motion to the sh aft. As the handle is drawn upward, as indicated in Fig. 2, the projections disengage the depressions, and the collar rotates freely without affecting the shaft.
The threaded end of the shaft is screwed partly out of head is to permit the insertion of a tool. After the tool is inserted it may be gripped as tightly as desired by screwing the end of the shaft into the head and forcing the jaws against the inclined surfaces of the shell. (See Fig. 4, where the jaws are entirely closed.)
The peculiar conformation of the grooves of the shaft is desirable for the reason that it increases the operative force of the clutch while permitting an easier retrograde motion, and for the further reason that it permits the chill used in casting the clutch-collar to be readily withdrawn. The collar 1/. protects the threads of the shaft and enables screws to be withdrawn by the use of the device.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The tool-gripper comprising the slotted and threaded head 7c, the. tapered shell 01, the jaw m having the lateral extension 0%, the jaw Z, adapted to the angle of jaw m, and the threaded shaft bearing against extension on, as set forth.
2. The clutch comprising the shaft a, spirally grooved, the collar 0, having the spiral ribs, the flange e, and the radial extensions f, the thimble g, having the enlarged bore g and the recesses h, and the handle '5 on the thimble, as set forth.
