- (No Model.)
J. H. MARSDEN.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING YARN, &c.
No. 406,846. Patented July 9, 1889.
I Q W 51% Wsfl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MARSDEN, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES G. SMITH, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING YARN, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,846, dated July 9, 188 1 Application filed January 12, 1889- Serial No.296,141. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN II. MARSDEN, of Utiea, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Yarn, &e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Hy invention relates to devices for removing bunches from thread or yarn; and it consists in the mechanism hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved device attached to a section of a bar. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line A 13, Fig. 1, showing the position of the parts when the thread or yarn is of the required size; and Fig. 3 represents a similar view to Fig. 2, showing the position of the parts when a bunch is found in the thread or yarn.
Similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts.
In manufacturing thread or yarn bunches or slugs will occasionally be twisted into the thread or yarn and frequently produce imperfections in the cloth or fabric into which the yarn is manufactured.
The purpose of the present invention is to furnish an automatic device for arresting the movement of the yarn or thread in which a bunch may be twisted. I accomplish this result by providing a movable comb 1, pivoted at 2 in case 3, attached to bar The comb is provided with a series of teeth 5,0f the required degree of fineness to engage the bunches in the thread or yarn. Comb 1 is counterbalanced by end 6, which maintains the comb in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, resting on adjusting-screw 7 ,by means of which the comb may be adjusted toward or from the thread or yarn. In advance of teeth of the comb I provide a protector 8, pivoted in case 3 at 9, having inclined face 10, the incline being in the direction of the movement of the thread or yarn 1.1, which moves through guide-eye 12 and slotted or perforated guide 13, the latter consisting of two bars; but a perforation or a slot may beused, forming a space for the passage of the yarn or thread. Ear 13, Figs. 2 and 3, is located in such position that the ends of teeth 5 of the comb will come in contact therewith, as shown in Fig. 3, whenever bunch 14 in the yarn or thread engages teeth 5 of the comb. By the movement of the thread or yarn the comb is moved into the position shown in" Fig. 3, thereby preventing the bunch from passing. Protector 8 is provided with weighted ends 15, Figs. 2 and 3,so that the protector is maintained normally in the position shown in Fig. 2. The inclined face is held against intermediate guide 16,the thread passing between the guide and the protector, the protector being provided so as to carry the thread or yarn of normal size over teeth 5 of the comb, so that when a bunch in the thread or yarn passes intermediate bar 16, as shown in Fig. 3, the protector moved into the position shown in Fig. 3, and thus allows the bunches to come in contact with the teeth of the comb.
Various modifications of my device will readily suggest themselves Without departing from the spirit of my invention, which consists in providing a movable comb and movable protector and guides.
My device can be applied to sp0oling,knitting, weaving, or any system of yarn or thread machinery.
In the drawings the device is shown in a vertical position; but any other position may be employed. The intermediate guide and adjustable protector may be dispensed with, though they are preferable.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the adjustable comb, the adjusting-screw, the guide, the movable protector, and the supports of said guidecomb and protector, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the movable comb, the guide, and the movable protector and support of each, arranged substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. MARSDEN.
