UNITED' STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HAT AND COAT RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,532,
daed July 9, 1889.
Application filed February 23, 1889. Serial No. 300,915. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN M. OWEN and JOHN R. ROBERTS, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Racks, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to improvements in hat and coat racks; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a hat and coat rack embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same with the base-plate in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front view of the device, showing it folded.
In constructing hat and coat racks in accordance with our invention we employ a base-plate A, which may be of any suitable material and of any desired dimensions, and is provided with suitable transverse openings B, through which the securing-screws C are passed to fasten the device toa fixed support. Nearits ends the baseplate is provided with vertical openings or passages D, through which the wire rod forming the hat and coat support is inserted. The hat and coat support E is formed of a suitable metallic rod or stout wire in serted vertically th ro ugh the openings D in the baseplate, and is bent forward above and below the said base-plate, providing the horizontal arms F G. lower arm G is provided with a knob H, on which the coat is hung, while the upper arm F, is bent upward at its end, forming the standard or support I, which is provided with a knob J at its upper end, on which the hat is placed. That portion of the wire which Thei passes through the opening D in the end of the base-plate is given a slight bend, so that it will exert a friction against the side of the opening and thereby hold the support at any desired angle to which 'it may be turned.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a very cheap and simple hat-rack, which can be secured to any fixed support. When it isvdesired to transport large numbers of the racks, the hat and coat supports are folded over toward each other, as shown in Fig. 3, s o that the device will occupy but a slight space and enable large numbers of them to be packed together. The knobs on the ends of the supporting-wire prevent the same punching holes in the hats or coats, so that the rack does not in any way injure them. The device can be ornamented in any desired way, and its advantages are thought to be obvious.O
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hat and coat rack comprising a baseplate having a vertical opening and a wire passed through said opening and curved so as to bind against the side of the opening, the wire being bent forward above and below the base-plate and the upper portion being bent upward, both ends of the wire being provided with knobs, as set forth.
InV testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. OWEN. JOHN R. ROBERTS.
