UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL.DUNN, OF GREENWVOOD, ARKANSAS.
COMBINED ANDIRONAND FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,508, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed February 27, 1889- Serial No. 361,335. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing near Greenwood, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and use f u]. Improvements in a Combined Andiron and Fender; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in a combined andiron and fender; and it consists in the construction, hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the andiron and fender attached thereto, and Fig. 2 a view of the fender removed from the andiron.
A represents an upright, from the rear of which projects an arm B, extending back into the fire-place, and upon which the wood rests. This arm B is bent downward at its inner end, forming the leg b. The upper end of the upright A is bent downward in hook shape at a. At its lower end the upright A is secured to the feet 0 0' 0 The feet 0 c c are preferably formed in one piece, and feet 0 c are parallel with the front of the hearth, and foot c -projects outwardly at right angles therefrom, thus affording a firm solid base for the standard or upright B, and obviating all danger of the andirons falling forward and throwing the burning logs onto the floor of an apart- 'ment, as is sometimes the case when such standard is provided with but two supporting-feet. The feetc c c are rounded upward the fender is thus easily applied and removed,
and when in position effectually prevents the logs from falling forward onto the floor of the apartment. By attaching the fender at about its center the space between each andiron and the jamb is protected as well as between the andirons.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined andiron and fender, the combination, with the upright having its upper end bent downwardly in hook form, and the supporting-feet having their ends turned up wardly and terminating in hook-shaped projections, of a fender or bow provided with an aperture near the center of its length to receive the bent end of the upright, and with similar apertures in its ends to receive the projections of the supporting-feet, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
,In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL DUNN.
