T0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN PEPPER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letshows the upper end of the butt-section of a rod or pole involving features of my invention.` Fig. 2 shows the butt-end of a pole in-I volving features of my invention. Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the butt-section of a rod or pole, in the upper end of which is socket 2, which is adapted to receive the lower end of the next section of the pole or supplemental or reducing ferrnle or bushing 4. Fer-rule 4is adapted to receive thel lower end 3 of one of the remaining sections of the pole, and being more preferable the second section from the butt-section, although it may equally as well be made to receive any section. A socket 6, Fig. 1, is provided in the butt-end of the pole vfor the reception of supplemental ferrule 4 when not in use, in which socket it lits sufficiently tight Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal sectiony to retain its place there unless forcibly removed by grasping the protruding end and drawing it out.

A modified form otconstruction of supplemental ferrule 4 is shown in Figs. 4 and 5,

'in which 9 is the open end for the reception of the ferruled end of a section of apole, and S is a barrel adapted to fit into socket 2 or 6, and provided with a plate 12, which is longitudinally movable in the barrel 8, and is secured t-o handle 10. The plate 12 is retained in barrel S by the inwardly-turned edge 11, Fig. 5. Plate 12 and handle 10 are intended to draw the reducing-ferrule out of socket 6. When so used, the handle 10is in the position shown in Fig. 4, and when the reducing-ferrule is in the socket 6 or 2 the handle 10 and plate 12 are in the position shown in Fig.A 5, or substantially so.

In using the modified form of construction of supplemental ferrule shown in Figs. 4 and 5 it is desirable to modify the form of construction of the butt-piece by providing a movable cap 7, Fig. 3, over the socket 6,which cap 7 may be removably secured by screwthread or any other well-known means.

A line-eye 13, Figs. G, 7, and S, is provided, having means for securing it to the pole, which, as I prefer to construct it, is a strip or plate 14, held to the pole by winding with thread, and to which plate 14 the eye 13 is preferably rigidly secured. Eye 13, instead of beinga solid ring, is formed circular, and having the ends free and lapping by each other, as shown in Figs. 6 and S, so that a line will run smoothly through the eye when drawn lengthwise of the pole, but may be removed from -the eye by drawing it nearly crosswise of the pole and passing it between the overlapping ends ofthe eye.

In using the device, when it is desired to shorten the rod or pole, the line is removed' IOO diately drop out upon. the removal of cap 7, so that the supplemental ferrule may be WithdrawnV thereby. er

A cap7 is provided to keep the handle 10 of the supplemental ferrule shown in Figst and 5 from protruding when the ferrule is contained Within the socket, or to keep the socket protected from foreign substances, or both, and this Will apply Whichever end of the butt-section (not both at the same time) the cap 7 is applied to, except the cap is not applied to the socket when the ferrule is in position to perform the function for Whichit isp'rovided. f if It will be readily observed that in that class of rods or poles Where the butt-section consists only of the handle (12.6., that part intended to be grasped by the hand) and a` place for the reel the other sectionsof the pole may be placedY on either end of the buttsection, and thus place the reel either above' or below the hand, as desired. In this case sockets 2 and 6 are transposed and perform the Oiiice of each other, and in the case of the modified forms of construction shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 it is desirable to place a screwthread substantially at the point indicated by 15, Fig. l, to receive and secure cap 7 when the section is used in the reverse position from that described.

Various alterations and modifications from those described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, With asectional jointed fishing-rod, of a supplemental redcing-fer rule for shortening the rod by substituting the same for one of the intermediate sections of the pole, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a sectional j ointed fishing-rod, of a buttfsection having a socket 2 and a socket 6, and a supplemental reducing-ferrule adapted to be placed in either socket, substantially as described, for the purposes'stated.

3. The combination, With a sectional j ointed iishing-rod, of a butt-section having sockets in each endthereof, a supplemental reducingferrule, for the purposes stated, adapted to be placed in either socket, and a cap adapted to be applied to either end of theV butt-section over the socket, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, in a sectional jointed iishing-rod, of a supplemental reducing-ferv rule having a handle capable of retreating into the ferrule, substantially as described, for the purposes stat-ed.

5. The combination,with a jointed fishingrod of three or more sections, of a supplemental reducing-ferrule, substantially as described, and a line-eye having overlapping free ends, substantially as described.
