B. H. BARBER.
LATCH.
Patented July 2, 1889.
Q Vibw may 3513 xi/W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD H. BARBER, OF RICH HILL, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO ROBERT INNIS, OF SAME PLACE.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,019, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed Febr ary 12, 1889.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rich Hill, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Doors and \Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in locks for doors and windows; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of parts, fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the improved lock applied in the operative position to a door. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the door-plate. Fig. i is a similar view of the frame-plate. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the latch. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line :1: cc, Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail in perspeetive of the locking turn-buckle.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A do.- ignates a door having a recess a in its free edge, over which is arranged the door-plate B, having a vertical slot C, and D designates the frame of the door, which is also provided with a recess E, covered by a frame-plate F. This frame-plate is provided with a flange G, which his against the edge of the frame and faces the edge of the door, and the said flange is provided with a vertical slot H, which registers with the slot in the door-plate when the door is in its closed position.
The latch K consists of a rock-shaft L, which is mounted in a bearing X in the frame-plate, and is provided at its inner end with a laterally-projecting tongue M, which is adapted, when the rockshaft is turned, to swing through the slot in the flanges of the frame-plate and engage the slot in the doorplate. This shaft is provided at its outer end with a knob N, which is elongated in direction parallel with the length ef the swinging tongue, whereby, when the door is unlocked, the-longer diameter of the knob is Serial No. 299,630. (No model.)
vertical, and when the door is locked the ionger diameter thereof is horizontal.
Pivotally secured by a screw 0 to the frame of the door, and immediately below and in a vertical line with the rock-shaft L, is a turn-button 0. The button 0 consists of a metal plate having a longitudinal rib 0 Below the end of the rib is formed a screw opening 0", through which the screw O above referred to is passed. The relative location of this button is such that it can only be swung to a vertical position when the door is locked; or, in other words, when the knob N is in a horizontal position, and when so arranged the terminals of the plate bear upwardly against the knob, thus preventing the rotation or unlocking of. the shaft L. From the above the object of elongating the knob is apparent.
The advantages of the improved lock are that it cannot be picked from the outside of the door. It is readily operated from the inner side of the door. It is simple and may be cheaply mam'lfactnred, and itis readily applied to the door without marring the surface thereof.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- I. The combination, with the door-plate B, vertically slotted, as at C, and attached to the edge of a door, of the frame-plate F, secured to the frame of the door, and provided with a flange G, having a slot II, which re; isters with the slot in the door-plate, and pro vided with the bearing X, arranged at an angle to the slot, and the rock-shaft mounted in the bearing in the frame-plate and provided with a laterally-projecting swinging tongue to engage the said registering slots, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a vertically-slotted door-plate affixed to the edge of a door and the flanged and slotted frame-plate affixed to the frame, of the rock-shaft provided with a tongue to engage the slots in the said plates, and the elongated knob affixed to the outer end of the rock-shaft and having its longer diameter parallel with the length of In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 10 the tongue, substantially as specified. my own I have hereto affixed my signature 3. The combination, with a vertieally-slotin presence of two Witnesses. ted door-plate affixed tothe edge of the 5 door and the slotted frame-plate, of the rock- RICHARD H. BARBER.
shaft provided with a tongue to engage the slotted plate and an elongated knob, and'the WVitnesses: turn-button O, to engage the said knob, sub- GEO. P. HUCKEBY, stantially as specified. W. O. ATKESON.
