, G. S. BILLINGS.
WAGON GEAR. No. 405,819. Patented June 25, 1889.

WITNESSES. II VVEIVTOH By GWZKQWM/ ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. BILLIN GS, OF LYONA, COLORADO.
WAGON-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,819, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed July 17, 1888- Serial No. 280,227. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BILLINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lyona, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVagon- Gears, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvementin gears of wagons used with a removable bed or box and on occasions without such bed or box-as, for instance, when hauling logs, lumber, &c.; and its objects are to provide a device for such wagons by which the wagonbed when used may be firmly secured to its place between the bolster-stakes and prevented from bouncing up and down between the stakes, and by which the load, when the bed is not used, maybe firmly bound and held in position-a device for such ends of simple construction, economical in cost, durable and efficient, and readily applied to either new or old wagon-gears; to which ends it consists in the features more particularly hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings is illustrated an embodiment of my invention, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of part of a wagon-gear with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a section on line 0006, Fig. 1, with a load placed on top, showing the operation of the invention.
In the figures, the reference- 1mmerals 1 and 2 indicate the ordinary bolsters of a wagongear, at the reach, and 3 3 the hounds, all of the ordinary or any desired construction.
5 is what may be termed an additional or intermediate bolster or binder, constructed of an y suitable materialm etal or wood-and of the same length as the ordinary bolsters l 2. It is adapted to be secured to the reach or to the hounds, or to anysuitable support at tached to the gear, and so that its upper surface lies in the same plane or about the same plane as do the upper surfaces of the ordinary and usual bolsters. It is perforated near each end,
and in such perforations are seated standards 7 7, the standards passing through such perforations. At their upper end they are formed with a hook 8 or with an eye, as may be desired, while the lower portion is threaded,
clamping or set nuts 9 being seated upon such screw-threaded portions.
In operation, if aload of logs, timbers, &c., is to be hauled, after the load has been put in position, the chain or cable is hooked to the hooks 8 of the standards 7 on both sides, passing over the load. By turning the nuts 9 in the proper direction the chain or cable is then tightened upon and over the load, binding it firmly together and securely upon the truck, so it cannot move or parts thereof be displaced.
lVhen the wagon box or bed is used, it is provided with pins or hooks, one on each side, and adapted to engage with the hooks 8. Being hooked therein and the nuts 9 properly turned, the bed orbox is firmlybound and secured between the bolster-stakes and upon the bolsters, and the Wear of the sides from rubbing against the stakes, due to jolting, &c., obviated. From this securing or binding function of this intermediate bolster it may appropriately be termed a binding-bolster or binder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the running-gear of a wagon and the ordinary bolsters thereof, of an additional or intermediate or binding bolster provided with hooked and threaded standards, substantially as set forth.
2. An additional orintermediate orbinding bolster for use with a wagon-gear, consisting of a bolster or bar 5 and standards 7 7, each of the latter having a hook 8, a threaded portion, and a nut 9, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. BILLINGS.
