W. F. KENDRIGK. STBAINER FOR KETTLES, &c.
No. 405,216. 4 Patented June 11, 1889.
77mm T'flendmbck DRICK, a citizen of the WILLIAM FRANCIS KENDRICK, GFWVINF F SAME PLACE.
TO H. L. GLASS,
IELD, IOWA, AssieNoR or ONE-H ALF evenness Foe KETTLES, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 310,405,216, dated June 1 1, 1889.
Application filed March 14, 1389. Serial in.
303,275. "(No model.)
To ail whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANCIS Kes- Unitcd States, residing at \Vinfield, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented new anduset nl I-u1- proveinents in Strainers which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an adjustable strainer or filter to be applied to pots, kettles, pails, 650.; and it consists in a certain novel I construction and combination of parts, fully accompanying plan view of the same extended described hereinafter iii-connection with the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective flew of the improved strainer applied in the operative position to a kettle. Fig. 2 is a as seen when applied to a larger vessel. Fig. 3is a bottom plan View of the strainer. Fig. i isa transverse section on the line so 50, Fig. 3.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A des ignates the strainer, which consists of a series of connected sections or sector-plates pivoted together near their peripheries and overlapping each other at their contiguous edges.
B designates the central or main section, which is provided on its under side a short distance from its side edges with the shoulders 12 b; and (J C designate the side or adjustable sections, which are pivoted to the outer corners of the main or central section at their the inner edge of the and lap under the edges of the latter section until they bear against the shoulders b I). The side or adjustable sections are provided inner angles with the bearing-ears D D, which extend toward. the central or main section and extend under the same, (even when the strainer is. extended to fit a larger vessel, as clearly shown in Fig. 2,) and thereby support main. section.
- The sections are perforated or slotted, as shown, to allowthe fluid contents of the vcswhile the solid contents are retained, and when the strainer is extended, as shown in Fig. 2, the adjacent edges of the sections are separated to form small spaces or slots, which, however, are not large enough to interferewiththe proper operation of the device.
The outer corners of the side or adjustable sections are provided with the integral clamps F F, which consist of the angular arms f],,
for Kettles, dzc, of
to fit over the upper edge of the vessel, and J the set-screws fitting in tapped aperturesnear arms and bearing the extremities of the V of the vessel. The,
against the outer surface main or central section is provided at its pcriphery with the angular supporting-arms G G,-whi'ch bear on the upper edge of the was 60 sel and prevent the said section from sagging. Then the vessel to which the strainer is applied is of a certain size, the periphery of the latter, will fit snugly therein, as shown in Fig. 1,9. small notch H being formed in the center of the periphery of the main section to form a drain for .the contents of the vessel; but if the vessel is larger or smaller, thereby causing the strainer to be extended or contracted, smallopenings will be formed between the periphery thereof and the sides of the vessel, which will form drains, as shown at a in Fig. 2, where the dotted line represcnts t-he'side of a vessel larger in circninfer ence than the curve formed by the strainer in its normal condition.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. An adjustable strainer for pots, kettles, &c., consisting of a series of sector-shaped see- So tions, substantially as specified.
2. In a strainer, the combination of a central section and the side sections pivoted near their peripheries t0 the central section, the adjacent edges of the said-sections 0verlapping each other, substantially as specified.
3. In a strainer, the combination of the central section irovided on its under side with shoulders I) l), and the side sections pivoted to the central section and sliding at their side edges under the adjacent side edges of the latter, substantially as specified.
4. In a strainer, the combination of -,a cenipp ing arnis G G .to bear on the upper edge of a vessel, and the side sections pivoted to the central section and provided with the clamps F Fto fit over the edge of the vessel and engage the same, substantially as specified.
In testimony'thati claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence-0t two witnesses.
WILLIAM FRANCIS KENDRICK.
