BED PAN.
No.l 405,182.
Patented June 11, 1889.
A TTOHNEY N. PETERS. PlwkwLlbogmpher. Washinglnn. 0.0,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGARETTA BIKER, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
BED-PAN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 405,182, dated June 11, 1889. Application filed March 14, 1889. Serial No. 303,292l (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARETTA BIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Newv York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Bed-Pans, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention consists of certain new and useful improvements in bed-pans, which are fully described in the following specification and hereinafter claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section in the line asx of Fig. 2 of my improved bed-pan. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof without the perforated steaming-plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the perforated steaming-plate. Fig. 4L is a section of said plate on, the line y y of Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the body of the bed-pan, which is a hollow vessel, in whose top is formed a semicircular opening B, from the circular edge of which rises a flange C, which extends backward toward the straight side of the opening, the flange becoming narrower and of diminishing heightas it cxtends back, until it sinks at the rear to the level of the top of the body of the bed-pan. The rear of the bed-pan is provided with a curved extension O, which starts from the rear end of the opening B, where it is of the same height as the body of thebed-pan and inclines downward gradually toward its outer edge, forming a suitable support for the hips of the patient. The extension O is hollow, and its interior communicates with the inte'- rior of the bed-pan.
The front and higher part of the flange C is provided with an opening D, to which is fitted a door E, which in this example is made to slide in grooves F, which receive tongues G, formed on the edges of the door. The object of the opening D is to provide means of access for administering an injection to a patient while he is resting on the bed-pan. The front part of the bed-pan is provided. with a pipe H, to which a groove I, formed on the bottom plate of the bed-pan, can conduct liquids that are to be discharged from the pan. A'perforated screen N is placed before the mouth of pipe H, to prevent any solid matter from passing into the pipe. The pipe H is provided with a cap J to close it when desired. An opening K for the discharge of rubbish is formed in the bottom of the pan, and is provided with a screw-cap to close it.
Into the semicircular openingB in the top of the bed-pan is fitted a removable perforated pan or vessel L, whose rim is turned over, asl
at M, so that it is thereby suspended on the edge of the opening B. The object of the perforated vessel is toenable the bed-pan to be used for administering a steam or vapor bath to the patient, the steam or hot Water being admitted into the bed-pan through the pipe H by any usual means-as, for instance, by a rubber or other tube-the bottom of the vessel preventing the body of' the patient from extending into the hot water which may have been introduced and from direct con tact with the current of steam, while the perforations allow the vapor or steam to act on the patient in a manner that may be more or less graduated and controlled by placing one or more layers of muslin on the perforated bottom of the pa-n L.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isnl. A bed-pan having in its top an opening B, from the edge of which rises a flange C, provided directly in its front With an orifice D, over which is fitted a movable door E, for opening` and closing said orifice, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A bed-pan provided with the pipe Hand at its top with the opening B, and upwardlyprojecting flange C about the opening, in combination with the removable pan L, having a perforated bottom and adapted to set in the top opening of the bed-pan, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGARETTA RIKER.
