ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ANDREW GALE ANl) EUCHER TREMBLAY, OF OHIOOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SWIVEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,531, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed January 19, 1889. Serial No. 296,943. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, ANDREW GALE and EUCHER TREMBLAY, both citizens of the United States, and both residing in Ohicopee, Hampden county, Massachusetts, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Flows, relating to the construction of the foot-latch, standard, and lever connecting the foot-latch and jointer, and to the combination of the same parts with each other and with other parts of the plow, the main objects thereof beingv to effect the turning and setting of the j ointer by the same motion and at the same time with the footlatch; and, further, so to arrange the parts.
Fig. III, an end elevation of the jointer-pinion, the same and all succeeding fi'gures being on a scale larger than the preceding; Fig. IV, a plan of the curved lever which connects the foot-latch and jointer; Fig. V, a side elevation of the'rear portion of the curved lever; Fig. VI, a plan of the lock in whose notches the arms of the foot-latch catch; Fig. VII, a plan of Fig. VI inverted; Fig. VIII, a side elevation of Fig. VI; Fig. IX, an end elevation of Fig. VI; Fig. X, a
view of the foot-latch, showing an edge ele-- vation of the slotted projection; Fig. XI, another view of the foot-latch, showing a plan of the slotted projection;
In our improved plow the point, landside, mold-board, beam, handles, and all other parts not hereinafter particularly described are made, constructed, and connected in any of the usual and well-known ways.
The foot-latch 1 is provided with the usual arms 2 2 2 and catches 3 S, and in addition we provide such latch with the central projection 4, in which we form the slot 5,the object of which is to provide means for combining the latch and jointer, as hereinafter described.
. The standard 6 is made of about the same interior thickness as the landside 7, but is provided or furnished on both sides, at front and rear, with moldings or projections 8 8',
. between which the handles 9 9 are held rig- On the rear of the idly by the bolts 10 10. standard is formed or made fast the lug 11, projecting on either side, and to which is bolted and made fast the irregularly-shaped lock 12. This lock is provided on its under side with six notches 13 13, in three of which the arms of the foot-latch alternately catch and are held. Below the foot-latch is the cylindrical rubber spring 14 and its cap 15, and the cap, spring, and foot-latch are held to the lock 12 by bolt 16. The spring 14 gives or yields sufficiently to allow the latch to be moved from one set of notches to the other when the plow is turned from side to side. The front of the standard is provided with a projection 17, in which is formed a horizontal slot 18, in which slot is hinged, by means of bolt 19, the irregularly-shaped lever 20, terminating in front in the short rack 21 and in the rear in pin 22. The lever is sufficiently curved around the handles-and standard to give it the necessary lateral play without its coming in contact with such handles or standard. In the rear the lever 20 is connected with the foot-latch by the extension of pin 22 through; slot 5. Forward the lever 20 is connected with the jointer 25 by the pinion 23, made fast on jointer-arbor 24, the pinion 23 meshing into the rack 21, and the length of lever 20 and the size of pinion 23 are-such that by the turning of the foot-latch from side to side, so as to lock and hold the mold-board, the jointer is at the same time and by the same movement turned, set, and held in its proper place for use. From this it is obvious'that the construction of our improved plow is such that the hairdles 9 9 and beam 27 maybe entirely detached and removed without disturbing or separating any other parts of the plow, and to accomplish this one of the objects of our invention.
WVe prefer to make the beam 27 of wood, for lightness; but it may be made of any other suitable material.
Having thusdescribed our improvements, what we claim as our invention is- 1. In combination with the standard and 3. The foot-latch having the slotted plate mold-board of a reversible plow, the foot- 4 and its actuating mechanism upon the latch having slotted plate 4, the slotted standplow-standard, lever 20, having rack 21, and ard projection 17, the pivoted lever 20, pinion pin 22, in combination with the jointer 25, ro- 15 5 23, and the jointer-arbor, substantially as tating stem 24, and pinion 23, substantially shown and described. as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the reversible ANDREW GALE. mold-board, of the plow-standard having the EUCHER TREMBLAY. lug 11, the lock-plate 12, the foot-latch 1, the Vitnesses:
:0 spring 14, and bolt 16, substantially as shown SIDNEY SANDERS,
and described. ELLEN S. ROBERTS.
